Not sure about Haneda but I think the US bases have their own power...so assuming that isn't out yet.

I just checked my inventory and I've got enough 12V an 7.4V heated clothing to keep frostbite at bay for a few days but once those batteries are gone, I better be as well. :D (or else you'll see me stealing car batteries!!)

I think the fire hasard and the probability that fire departement will be absolutely useless makes the idea of trying to bug out as soon as it stop shaking a pretty interesting option. Especially if you include the aftershocks. Remember that few stuff caught fire in and around Tokyo last march...

Maybe a safe pickup/rally point can be decided ?

Assuming you can make it there, you'd be very firmly told that they've got a whole lot of servicemen and women to take care of, and that when that's done and any evac completed, they might think about letting you in in a month or three.

I think it's actually designated a disaster shelter for us 'mercans so I don't think it would be an issue getting in as much as it would be getting a flight out.

Still better than the (non) official French modus operandi(s)...

Bugging out of Japan: everybody to Seoul, while we send them airbusses...

Bugging out of the Hexagone: Everybody of to N'djamena (which is in Chad btw) and tune in to radio London for further orders... Those that can't do it, time to dust off your german...

In other words, "we'll be too busy getting out ourselves to help you"

I still think the base is my best bet...I can always make it back to my apartment (If it's still standing) if all else fails. :shroom:

I have thought time and time again how simple it would be to use the hot water that flows out of the ground (for free) and pump it around the walls of peoples homes to heat them.

How often have you walked back to your ryokan in an onsen type town on a winter's night and it is warmer outside than inside your room? The reason is that the overflow of the water just runs down the streets.

I know it is a bit of a pipe dream to imagine that local governments would arrange this type system for home owners/builders/renovators to access. Also that architects would have to consider insulation and heating options during the planning rather than just reusing the old prefab designs over and over.

But consumers of heat are not understanding or caring that the rest of the world (and Hokkaido) use central heating. Or perhaps they do but just think "shouganai".

Who knows.

I am lucky in that my apartment was well built about 20 years ago and it has great insulation - it is cool in summer and warm in winter. I would prefer double windows to help with the condensation problems but I am planning to ask for them in my next renewal.

There are way too many people in Japan for that to work for everyone. They use thermal heat in Iceland but the population of that country is only about 318,000.

Considering how overpriced homes are here, besides ignorance, it's either gaman or just plain stupidity.

Dood... Paris have city wide central heating powered by burning the trash outside of the city in special facilities that produce hot pressurised water stream, nearly all buildings are plugged to this for their central heating source. And we don't even have volcanoes...

Here... even from my roof I can see a more or less sleepy volcano... the whole rock is sitting on a powerplant waiting to be used...

That's all I am sayin'.

Now that nuclear is not the energy source of choice, it might be worth looking into something like this.

(Is it a concern that I had to stop myself from typing "nukleah" as I was quoting text from Coligny?)

It's that time of year again...

Crashing at a friend's house, I found the mama doing the same as many lemur mamas seem to do. Keep the windows open in the bath, toilet, and senmenjoooo area with the "needs air exchange!!" excuse. So basically, when you wake up in the morning to take a piss, you are greeted by freezing tile floor, freezing wind...the warm toilet seat can only make up for so much. Then you shower with a draft (4th story apt) and finally try to brush your teeth...though the cold may be a plus here as the shivers you get can act like a sonic toothbrush.

Ok, ventilation is fine when needed but these windows are open 24-7. WTF??? Living in comfort in 1st world Japan sure seems like slummin it in Tokyo. Even the hokkaido hockey people I know are like "WTF? Life in Tokyo is too cold during winter!" I guess they're spoiled with inaka things insulation and central heating.
