I am always impressed by how she even fixes up the pronunciation and emphasis of syllables in station names to match the expectations of Western ears. YoYOgi. HaraJOOku. ShiBOOya. Had no idea who she was, so I am with Iraira in my gratitude to Mulboyne for solving this long running mystery for me!

The wife of a friend of mine used to do the English announcements for the Tokaido Shinkansen back in the days before JNR was privatized. There are a number of people who do the Japanese announcements on the trains and there's a Wiki list here (Japanese) which will tell you who is on your line. Naoko Miura is most often used for JR East including the Yamanote Line. Christelle Ciari isn't the only voice used for English announcements but she does most of the main lines.

I remember seeing a TV show which introduced a woman who turned out to be the voice of ATM machines and that message you get when you can't reach someone's Docomo cellphone. Can't remember her name.

The Docomo girl is Keiko Nakamura (I'm pretty sure I'm remembering that right)....I saw the same show.

One of my former Japanese teachers in Tokyo had done the recordings for a certain train line... although they had been replaced by then.

It makes sense, because he had a very clean, nice-sounding voice.

An Australian friend of mine does the recent shinknsen announcements. She said JR really know what they want in terms of intonation and accent. I think it is because they want newer recordings to not "clash" with older recordings.

Freaks me out though when I catch the Shink as I can still tell it is her. She didn't make it public that she had the gig but when I asked if it was her, she confirmed it was.

JR actually did something very right when they chose her: what a great voice! Clear and intelligent without sounding cold and BBC-ish, as well as having what sounds to me like a perfect blend of American and British English.

The person who's voice is used on the Sobu and Keiyo Lines, OTOH....Why JR makes dual announcements in Japanese and English on these lines with their 99.9 percent Japanese ridership is beyond me, but the volume at which they play them is unbelievably high; are the Japanese all bloody deaf?! I've taken to always wearing noise-canceling headphones and rocking out 18th-century sinfonias and concerti. I'm just waiting for the time someone importunes me with a compliant about the sound of my headphones; I'll tell them to take it up with JR.

I have seen the dubbed 'merican Mad Max and it just freaks me out. By the time that Beyond Thunderdome came out, the dialog was certainly less 'strine . But I liked the raw look and sound of the first movie.
