hahahaha, amazing memory they have as well. My cat was playing with a balloon as a kitten and the sting got tangled around one of it's paws...first reaction is to run....but the balloon, still attached, follows, occaisionally smacking kitty in the bum or getting caught on something and giving her paw a tug back. Talk about traumatic...this went on for about 15 minutes until the kitten was ready to pass out. Now, even the sight of a balloon sends her running and hiding.

Similar thing happened with my cat - she was playing with a plastic shopping bag on the floor and the handle got caught around her neck. She couldn't get it off so instead of fighting her way out of it, she bolted from one end of the house with this stupid bag trailing behind her. Took a while to calm her down.

Talk about fight or flight....

Dubstep + Cat = Terror too.

Was playing some mixtape and cat just went totally fucking mental. I haven't figured out exactly what sound it was in the mix yet though.

I got me this one in red for 3 man:

http://www.mmech.com/ultrasonic-cutters/honda-usw-334

The blades are standard stationnery blade (around 300 yens /40 pieces). Excellent for cutting/carving anykind of plastic and not bad with various foams.

1 it's the kind of tools you buy once in a lifetime, 2 when you work and carve as much pet plastic and styren as I do leading to colossal daily bloodloss. The cost of the devicenis rapidly reimbursed by the reduction of bandages and blood transfusion expenses...

So, how does this ultrasonic knife work out? I read some reviews on the river in Japan that it is less suitable for plastic, because it melts the plastic. Did you run into this problem?

I plan to cut some acrylic plates, and wonder whether this knife would be suitable. (no cats, only a Guinea pig to worry about, but that won't attack me as long as I feed it bananas).

If you stay stationnary too long at a single point the vibrations cause heating triggering a small curling of the plastic. But it's in the case you use it like you would use a chainsaw. Put at the point of entry then slowly pushed along the cut path.

But if instead you use it like you would use a standard knife, that is, several effortless light path along the full cutting path(like for skinning a rabbit... maybee) it gives quite a clean cut.

For acrylic, maybe a hobby table saw like proxxon might give better results, and straighter cuts.

I got this one... she's good especially for the price, and you can't lose more than a few finger at a time if you screw up...

Thanks for pointing that out. Yes, a table saw may work better. Proxxon is a bit too small for me, since I need to cut pieces of about 35 cm width. I will be looking for some bigger table saw with a blade suitable for acrylic. Unfortunately, table saws are not very popular in Japan, since I rarely see them in home centers.

Proxxon has a bigger model. It's kind of expensive though (circa 33K yen):

But I'm surprised you don't see table saws at home centers where you are. You don't see the big sprawling ones like you'd see in a proper woodshop, but up here this one seems to be everywhere.

Thanks. What is the brand of the latter one? I tried to find it on the river in Japan, but it did not show up in my searches. Could you tell me the part of the URL that comes after the ...co.jp ?

The brand is "E-value".

Here's the link (and you know what to do to make it work):

My local home centre here in Fukuoka carries that table saw too (the only one), but I personally will not buy one of these generic Chinese/Korean brands.
I do a fair bit of woodworking, and I've used cheap Chinese and/or Korean power tools, only to regret it in the long run. I finally tossed the generic hand-held circular saw I'd be using for about 15 years and got a Makita recently. The difference is like night and day.
Instead of a table saw, I have a stand something like this one for use with the hand-held saw (but a bit larger, with holes for a router and jig saw).
If you are only cutting small amounts of wood/plastic, I guess something like the Proxxon hobby equipment will do, but I would not expect it to last very long.

OK... First, even the small proxon can cut parts of 1 meter in lenght especiallyt for acrylics, the important part is to have support for the stock level with the bed of the tablesaw. You need bigger tools only for bigger thickness, Have to check but up to 5 mm the proxxon is perfect.

The woodworking tablesaws will be a real slaughter with plastic if you need a clean cut and was worrying for the melting from utlrasound knife. You might as well use a flamethrower.

As for the minitablesaw adapter. It's sort of good for wood. But you need either a dedicated half height folding workbenck or a low table to screw it to.

If not...

Can I have your stuff when you kill yourself by accident ?

Last thing...

The most important part for a saw... is not the brand of the device... but the quality of the blade... Usually, a chinese saw with a good blade will do a surprisingly good job, while a Bosh/Hitachi/Makita saw with a cheap ass blade will make your life and work miserable...
