The Yomiuri Shimbun | Mar. 22, 2012
The Fukushima prefectural government deleted data provided by the central government on the projected spread of radioactive materials just after the crisis at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant broke out, sources said Wednesday.
The central government sent data compiled by the System for Prediction of Environmental Emergency Dose Information (SPEEDI) to the prefectural government via e-mail. However, the data sent between March 11, when the crisis began, and March 15, 2011, was deleted...more...

Yet, I doubt anything sinister was going on in terms of the deletion. Being March, it was probably a newly transfered worker who was not properly trained and didn't have a clue as to the importance of the data.

except for the fact that I don't know a lot of workplace where it's even possible to delete permanently emails...

hd space is cheap, loabilities lawsuits are not...

ffs there even some where they print everything for archival...

Well It still needed the prime minister to say "Nobody's fault, all is good, please carry on".


(Seriously, in any other country this would have triggered a massive shitstrm from the judicial branch... not even sure the guy could have kept his job... Most of the time even giving an opinion on a justice decision is quite a good carrer limiting move.)

So there might have been a possible problem for Tepco before that...

Well, remember about three or four years when the government lost several million pension records, so I would guess, no, it isn't common practice to keep backup records.
