That was an accident, not a disaster. The scale is rather different.

but its was caused by the same problems, and when those problems came to light the Japanese population did nothing as usual.

I don't dispute that but it isn't the point.

The media in general keeps saying that Fukushima is the "biggest nuclear disaster since Chernobyl." It's fear mongering, implying that smaller nuclear disasters have been happening here and there over the past couple of decades. Fukushima is (thank fuck!) the only major nuclear accident (aka disaster) since Chernobyl. The two disasters likely happened for much the same basic reasons too: Human complacency.

I don't know much about Chernobyl, but did they have a similar string of accidents and misshaps and coverups and further accidents leading up to their meltdown, like was seen here?

No... not at all... They were choir boys by comparison. Basically they where trying to test the emergency cooling system in case of loss of grid power. Their previous test showed that the diesel backup generators were too slow to come online so they though aboot using the inertia in the steam turbine like in a standard rotary UPS. But a mix of delays, crew shift switch, reactor design and bad luck set them up for disaster. (and evacuation to start 2 days later, and the whole clusterfark to be stabilized few weeks later).

Truly, Fukushima and Tchernobyl have nothing in common... Aside for population really close to the plant... we'd have been better of with another Tchernobyl... that is... if Gorbatchev also was the prime minister...

I read it more as safemongering... "no biggies guys, it's still smaller than Tchernobyl, and we survived that on, right ? right ?"

Missed the high hard one again Coligny. The man gave a speech, explained what happen and said Gomen-a-sorry. Nothing else required as that made him untouchable in Japan.

After the speech, everybody started singing Shoganai in A Cappella.

The design of the reactor was a big factor in the Chernobyl accident, if memory serves. It didn't have much of a containment vessel around it and the core was exposed and the graphite moderator burned. The fire is what caused the radiation to spread over such a vast area.

That said, I wasn't trying to compare Chernobyl to Fukushima. My only point was that saying, "Fukushima is the worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl" creates a very different image than "Fukushima is the first nuclear disaster since Chernobyl" or "Fukushima is the only nuclear disaster since Chernobyl". The first statement is used to generate fear and fear boosts ratings and sells copy.

I don't exactly see Aussies, Canadians, Brits, Americans etc getting off their duffs about all the deep shit their economies are in thanks to thieving pyramid scheme 'businesses' called Goldman Sachs etc who actually run a lot of the positions in the 'different from Bush' Obama's govt, or getting serious about their cuntries not serving the American Empire where soldiers and civilians are dying every week so Chevron, Shell etc can make the world safe for their corrupt owners and ceos investments.

Ordinary people in western cuntries are funding corporate welfare - the never ending handout to the cunts who screwed up everything in the first place by not really investing but creating ponzi schemes where ordinary people's money ends up being moved offshore to the Cayman Islands and Jersey. Then our govts hand over more tax money to the scum, then they hand over money for 'aid' which goes into bureaucrats' and dictators' pockets in Africa and other 3rd world cuntries and then gets moved offshore. Then the people of those cuntries get blamed for their supposed 'low IQ'. And so it goes round and round.

I don't see our cuntries' people taking any action over this, esp the Yanks who are being bled dry by the Federal Reserve as well as Goldman Sachs, the Pentagon, etc, etc.

Flipping through my copy of Bix's book on the Showa Emperor. The more things change, eh...

...the unrealistic and incompetent actions of Japan's highest leaders. The (wartime emperor) ideology that sustained their morale made it almost impossibly difficult for them to perform the act of surrender. Knowing they were objectively defeated, yet indifferent to the suffering the war was imposing on their own people...the emperor and his war leaders searched for a way to lose without losing - a way to assuage domestic criticism after surrender and allow their power structure to survive.

Ha - thanks for that. The cunt from former Conservative govt of little Johnny Howard has as much chance of getting that up and running as Aussies have of agreeing to behead themselves.:spin:

Our present govt are absolute cunts but they're not that fucking stupid. Esp as they owe their existence to a minority party - the Greens. Bob Brown etc will tell em to not even think of it.

Exposing the already insanely deadly australian fauna to radioactive waste... No way this plan could go wrong...

Meanwhile it could make for some super duper horror movies... that satanic roadtrain fueled on human body parts will look like a fluffy bunny by comparison...

LOL, Coligny is spot on with this shit. My company donated heated riding gear to bike rescue crews that are part of the first wave in after these disasters. Reg. cars/transportation usually can't get past all the debris and road destruction whereas offroad bikes and insanity like he posted may. (though the size of that thing makes me think it won't fit on most rural streets here)
