If visiting small claims court isn't difficult for you, do it. Organizations like this depend on people giving up, so I try to keep fighting for as long as I can. Even if you don't get money, try to gain some satisfaction by inconveniencing and possibly shaming members of their staff. That's my goal in these situations. What could they do to retaliate? Misshandle your bags again? That's a risk either way.

If I were you, I'd mail big bags in the future. Hotels in most countries are fine with receiving baggage through the mail as long as you reference a reservation. ...plus, I hate waiting near the luggage carousel. That's why I only take one carry on bag when I travel.

How retarded can one be by putting $160,000 worth of watches, rings and necklaces in one's check-in luggage?

Jack please post a picture of your luggage, preferably with a little non-photoshopped not on one of them saying "F-you, iraira!", so we all know about your good quality luggage.

I know you just try to be a jackass as usual...

But just by looking at the kind of damage done here, there was no real solution as far as "luggage material" goes. Yes a woodcrate would have done a better job protecting his stuff... But it's not a "luggage" anymoare. It look like they tryed to put them through some kind of shredder but gave up before the machine completly finished...

Let's review what materials are availbul for making lighweight and strong luggagez:

Aluminum: might have been more resilient against perforation. But for the heavy shock sustained at the corner would have been at least partially deformed. Also, rivet would have popped out the same way.

Fiberglass/carbon fiber: structurally extremly strong, lightweight. But the perforation marks seen would certainly have punctured the resin/fabric mix weakening the structure. Also, on strong impact (out of spec) they have tendency to shatter. Once again, the corner wheels support would have collapsed, and rivet popped out.

Leather... perforation would have been the same trouble.

No, I think the best solution would have been for the airline company NOT TO EMPLOY RABBID MONKEYS for luggages handling... at least that would shutup the buffons of your kind that blame the victim...

Transport and software are these days 2 things where you have to pay while not being allowed to complain if you don't get anything in return. Post office: no kakitome, if it's not delivered then fuck you... Airline luggages.. pay specially for overwieight luggage, have stuff stolen or destroyed... FUCK YOU... and on and on and on...

Carbon fiber is very stiff, but not very resistant to localized pressure. For that you need Kevlar. But then again, you're talking about expensive materials, making your bag an ideal target for thieves.

Yes, and CF is sort of single use only... once there is a scratch in a part with fiber damage you can kiss rigidity good bye... Fiberglass being much more mediocre don't suffer from the same shortfall when you repair it... it stays mostly as good (or bad depending on your viewpoint) as it was from the factory...

True. From a cost perspective Fiberglass is also preferred, so I guess Chokonen should buy himself Fiberglass suitcases next time.

What I learnt working 1 month for UPS is :
- no need for a ball to play soccer, you can use small parcels
- you can put a laptop box at the bottom corner of a 2 ton pallet
- 'handle with care', 'this side up', 'hazardous materials', wtf is this?
- people will walk and jump on packages, pretending there's lava on the floor

The only advice I can give is to use the box-in-a-box strategy : cardboard box containing your precious stuffs (make sure nothing is moving), dampening layer (4-5 centimeters of newsprint or polystyrene), strong cardboard enclosure duct taped or plastic wrapped to death.
Yes this adds weight and bulk, it takes more time to pack and you will pay more, but it guarantees you that your goods have somehow a chance to survive.

Unless they are hit by a forklift. Did I tell you how awesome forklift races are?

Targets...

A parcel without these attract much less attention and have chances to be handled in a much normal (safer) way...

Remember I said good quality, not expensive. I have a set of soft bags made of kevlar. I have had them for 30 years and they are indestructible. The holes you see in the pictures would have not happened in my kevlar bags. But of course with all the made in China shit that's out there today it's hard to find well made stuff.

The "repaired" bag came back with the largest hole stitched up...the rest of the holes unimpaired, dents and damage to the rails untouched, and some genius decided to put a label on top of the clear plastic window where the ID tag goes, and then rip it off leaving a layer of paper and sticky goo and rendering it useless...un-fucking-believeable.

My thoughts exactly. The value of the damaged merchandise is enought to motivate me to kick some ass. For now, everything is on hold until I get a response from them regarding this "repaired" bag and a damage report that I've been requesting for the last month... ...but yes, I will make raise hell with small claims. if I don't get a decent reply out of them by the weekend, I'll move forward with it...I can always amend the complaint later.

Ehhh, that would be an additional shipping charge that might be more than the ticket. Not to mention I'm basically funding a good portion of these flights on what I would be paying to ship the stuff in my luggage anyways.

Jack wrote:Next time buy good quality stuff. You will learn as you get more flying experience.

Coligny already pointed out the obvious to you but seriously Jack, if you're going to troll, put a little more effort into it and try to make it funny.

This is what I did this time. Ended up taping two of them together for a parcel that was .00000000000001kg under the weight limit. The agent at the counter was impressed but I think he was also warned about me as, without asking, he added a bunch of FRAGILE and PRIORITY stickers to my luggage hahahahaha :D

Elitist much?

Just came back from a trip. 30kgs of checked baggage. Carefully packed items (wine bottles as well) in a cardboard box or two within soft luggage to reduce weight and increase my carrying capacity. No dramas thus far. Anything too delicate is for carry on.
