Buying a New Note/Netbook

Postby IparryU » Mon Jan 30, 2012 10:58 am

Time to get a new one...

Have this one now:
ACER AspireONE D250

Would like to play Starcraft 2 on it... but not that important.
SC2 Specs:
Minimum System Requirements*:

PC: Windows XP/Windows Vista/Windows 7 (Latest Service Packs) with DirectX 9.0c
2.6 GHz Pentium IV or equivalent AMD Athlon processor
128 MB PCIe NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT or ATI Radeon 9800 PRO video card or better

PC/Mac: 12 GB available HD space
1 GB RAM (1.5 GB required for Windows Vista/Windows 7 users, 2 GB for Mac users)
DVD-ROM drive
Broadband Internet connection
1024X720 minimum display resolution

Recommended Specifications:

PC: Windows Vista/Windows 7
Dual Core 2.4Ghz Processor
2 GB RAM
512 MB NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX or ATI Radeon HD 3870 or better

I am going to dual boot WinXPSP3, Kubuntu, and keep Win7 if it comes with the new computer as I still haven't got to play around with it in English yet.

Looking at a USD300 to USD450 price range but will go higher depending on the computer.
Looking at the below on Newegg:
Acer Aspire AS5733Z-4469
SAMSUNG NP-R540-JA08US

Not really sue of any other computers up my ally... using Newegg for searching purposes and will look more in depth for price bargaining when I find out what make and model i am happy with.

Open for any ideas, pointers, etc.

Used and partially abused OK

Are you buying in the US? I think if you spend a bit of time looking US$500 will get you a lot of computer these days. I quite like the ASUS (K53E) I just got but I'm not a gamer so don't know how well it would go on that front.

Well from what you gave us, are you wanting a gaming rig? Cuz I just bought an MSI gt780 off newegg, and quite happy with it after i finally cleaned all the preload shit off it. I'm not much of a gamer (even though its a gaming rig) but I am a big programmer, so the bigger size is a plus in terms of window and keyboard real estate. Plus, 16 gigs of ram man

buying in Japan, but depending on how things work out... I may go to Yokota AFB and buy something out there.... If New Sanno has computers I may peek my head in there too...

Dont want a J-Keyboard... hate them with a passion...

I just looked at the K53E and is looking rather good. gonna look at the other models of the K53(insert_random_letter) to see the price/spec range

not a gaming rig... just one that can handle SC2... but the copmuter you mentioned had pretty nice specs... but USD1K over my budget :(

I can play SC2 on my old(er) VAIO VGN-N130G no problem... but this comp is pretty run down and I use it for my kids videos and what not.

need to get this shit bought and done in about 2 weeks... next step is to find a way to ship it to JPN address or base address
hmmm...

The one linked has a screen too small 600 for 720 and a processor that is more coffee machine class than personnal computing spec.
There's cheap computers... and there is too cheap computers... I think they were called netbooks beforen the IPad send them to the dumpster...

so a notebook would be a better buy for what I am wanting?

I am going to go to yokota AFB to buy a computer at the BX... so price will drop, i just don't want another POS netbook (like what i have now) that cant run everything i want to.

i have kubuntu on my netbook and Thunderbird and other application's windows dont show everything it should cause of the screen size... really irritating.

Well, I just got a new MacBook Pro after being computerless for half a year.

I have some posts to catch up on as well as taking care of some promised obligations.

I bought in August 2011 a desktop PC at Dospara, also from that Prime Series. I've had no issues with it and am happy with the machine. It did come with a J-keyboard, but luckily I still had an old Dell keyboard that I could hook up to it.
It was delivered at home, with everything installed in the box, including the separate graphics card I selected. What surprised me was that they insisted that I should take out an insurance to cover this installation and transportation. I had to manually stop that within one month otherwise the insurance would keep on running with automatic money withdrawals from my credit card.
I did not want the Japanese OS, so I bought it without and installed Ubuntu on it.

I'd keep an eye out at techbargains.com and see what will ship to Japan. Dell 14z (on sale) could fit the bill for a reasonably small and light laptop.

ehhmmmm... aboot dat'
10 Years ago the only good point for Dell computers was their corporate tech support that was not asking question before sending spare or tech... But the quality was already craptastic... From everything I heard... It's gone downhill since...
