Sky Tree vs China's Skyscraping Wannabes

Skyscraper boom linked to economic bubble
Mainichi | February 10, 2011
...
Bloomberg columnist William Pesek Jr. wrote an article saying that people's competition to gain height is sparking a new economic bubble that is bound to burst....
...there are 200 skyscrapers in Japan and 2,000 in Shanghai, but Pesek's article says 3,808 of 7,559 skyscrapers in the world are in China. People who see the cluster of high-rise buildings in Shanghai would certainly believe his assertion. If desire for extreme height and heated competition to build taller buildings are evidence of an economic bubble, then China is at risk...more...

Puffed-up Japanese are proudly calling Tokyo's Sky Tree (634m) the world's "second tallest structure" when in fact it's only barely the second/third tallest structure to compared to various radio towers between 646m to 624m.

We've discussed it before, but radio towers are the status symbols of the East Germanys of the world who don't have the design/engineering/economic wherewithal to pull off a real skyscraper. Japan's status as a has-been is secure now.

Don't you love it when those punks go on bragging that the Tokyo tower is taller than the Eiffel tower...

Totally missing the point that it was to be a temporary technological demonstrator... supposed to be dismantled later And TT is only 25m higher... 70 years too late...

Wow. From that goofy radio tower to War and Peace in twelve posts - and we'd already moved to Paris by post #5!

FWIW, I'm still pondering why East Asians are fixated with building phallic-shaped monstrosities all over their cities.

let's not forget canada's cn tower, completed in 1976. it still stands around #3 or #4 (as far as towers go) after all these years, behind sky tree and a couple others.
