After The Quake, Japanese Shop For Survival
Walk into any large Japanese retailer nowadays, and you might think Japan had become a nation of survivalists.

Aeon, a Wal-Mart-like chain of stores, devotes a sizable chunk of floor space to something called bosai-yohin, or "disaster-protection gear."

The assortment of disaster goods — meant to keep people alive for several days — is mind-boggling...

ive never seen such a disaster obsessed people

and what was with the announcement of the mega quake with four! years. is there some new quake predicting technology to be able to say within the 4 year mark?

or is this just a pessimistic ass culture that likes to suck its teeth and expect the worst. canned beans seems like a good idea, but if things get crazy, i will just rely on my looting skills

You weren't around in March last year?
Or in 1995 for the Hanshin earthquake?

I wouldn't exactly call it an "obsession."

But not everyone buys into the buying craze. In fact, at least one survivor of the deadly Kobe earthquake of 1995 says the obsession with buying supplies is a waste of money for urban residents, who are never more than a day away from help.

Instead of investing in helmets and dried food, he told readers of his website that city dwellers should focus on how to keep their furniture from crushing them alive when, and if, the big one hits.

Great advice if his situation in the deadly Kobe earthquake of 1995 repeats itself exactly... But why not do both things, on the offchance things work out differently?

I didun't read this on context... But for any event affecting n-people (where n>100) you are quite likely to find someone saying even the most insane thing...

Basing any decision on "at least one people said that..." is bordering on insanity... at least come up with your own reason... right or wrong... it's still better than "I heurd one guy said, so it must be trou..."

I don't make much sense... 1 day away from help... It's Japan... nothing is really further than 1 day from help anyway... But in a big city... it's one day from help times baziliuns of people, times hundreds of destroyed building, no place to drive, no place to land...
