Yeah, given all the options, Facebook has the most peeps, options, and isn't designed to look like MySpace did 10 years ago. I remember 5 years ago I was in Boston for a Japan career day...the Mixi dorks were struttin' around like they owned the place. Their booth was filled with job seekers...yet some of the US based J-folk at other booths were laughing at them for knocking off MySpace/Facebook and said they wouldn't last

BTW, sort of OT but juggling all the lemurs I do, just like SNS, the messaging/voice call situation is about the same. I've heard that FB is doubling down on Japan. Japan's economy have been shit for 20+ years but it's still a huge consumer market and it's the biggest market in Asia for SNS and cloud so tech companies are investing here.

They've definitely increased their efforts the past year or so. Not sure Mixi wis worth buying out though, better to save the $$ and watch it shrivel up and die.

The number of Japanese I see on the trains checking FB is really growing these days. Never saw that a year ago, I'm sure.

Mixi was always very gay. Needing an invitation from a friend (this is so Japanese), then just constant updates of food photos (J FB friends aren't much different actually, thinking about it). Still good to have western and J friends in one place.

Slightly off topic but tomorrow is the beginning of the end for facebook.

Facebook makes 80% of it's cash off advertising but the problem is most people just ignore it. Another issue is the mobile version has little or no advertising. Once public, Facebook will be pressured to make bigger and bigger profits every year. The only ways they can do this is either make the ads more in your face or sell users personal information to other companies/governments. Both these options will alienate users. 50% of Americans already think FB is a fad. Things don't look too good but Zuck is too young and inexperienced to notice.

I'm not planning on buying any fb stock, but people have said the same sorts of things about Google. I think fb will be around and profitable for the foreseeable future.

Edit: I wouldn't put much faith in the American public. Something close to 50% think the world is ~6000 years old and a good number believe the world will end within our lifetimes.

Google get browsing habits + email of everybody. They can much more reliably profile users and population. And therefore have serious data to sell.

Facebook... they get what people put in it... and... garbage in... garbage out... I think facebook survival is much more linked to it's monopolistic nature than anything else... once a group start using it, you'r stuck. (myspace failed... YES... but I think the bloat killed it... noway grandma could have survived the amount of running unicorn farting rainbows with a cranked to 11 synthetizer version of britney spears "hit me one more time" autoplaying in the background...

Google... as long as their search results are good they will stay on top. Not too difficult compared to anything else these days... must admit they don't even really need to be that good to be on top anyway... For the mail... they only need half of the users of the planet to know nearly everything anyway (well, not really if you do the math... but you get the idea)...

Which I find funny... because one thing I miss with FB is the contact with the local branches of some companies. For example hte guys from Renault Ireland were extremly communicative and open to ideas and suggestions... It depends on the way you manage your communication...
