Well, I was off FG for quite some time, and I've always given him the benefit of the doubt as he is pretty funny at times. And he's French so you gotta cut him a bit of slack for that handicap...

Ok, as usual, when argument runs short go for character assassinashiun:

As for gates, like zuckerberg, sure, you can bow before their money... Look further than this... and it's not glorious. It's exactly like the 19th century philantropists businessmen. Make a lot of money shoddily on one side. When you are stuffed give away somewhere else what you can't even manage to spend by yourself.

Yokohammer wrote:One of the unsolved problems with nuclear power, and a significant hidden cost, is how to dispose of the spent fuel. The pro-nuclear crowd hate to talk about this because there is no solution. Thus far, the human race has not come up with a clean, cost-effective way to dispose of spent nuclear fuel. There is no technology to neutralize it, at least on a sufficient scale, so the current interim stopgap measure is to store it somewhere, usually underground. And it really is nothing more than a stopgap measure. Nuclear power development has jumped the gun, with the assumption that "we're smart, we need nuclear power now, so we'll figure out how to dispose of our fatally radioactive trash someday." But so far nothing.

Spent fuel has to be stored in secure managed facilities that continue to cost money for ... well, indefinitely. It cannot simply be buried on a remote island somewhere and left alone. Someone could always come along and dig it up (think "dirty bombs"), or there could be a natural disaster of some sort that exposes the buried fuel, and there we have another nice radioactive plume enveloping the planet. This is not a small deal. It costs a fortune to keep nuclear refuse safe, and there is no end in sight. This is a very real part of the cost of nuclear energy. Not to mention the fact that each new spent nuclear fuel dump is another piece of the planet that is now useless for anything else.

The same goes for decommissioning nuclear plants. You can't just lock the door and walk away. Think decades and decades of cleanup, or more likely, another piece of the planet that can no longer be used for anything else with an ongoing and not-insiginificant price tag.

It's easy enough to come up with figures that "prove" how clean and cheap nuclear power is if you leave all of this, plus the potential cost of accidents, out of the equation.

I always wondered why this stuff isn't sent out to space. Hell, it could probably be used to power a ship to suicide it into an uninhabitable planet or something.

Given how (not) successfull Jaxa is with their rocket launches, I suggest that you stop immediately to give them even worse ideas than they can come up by themselves...

Coligny, I wonder what you are doing toward helping the planet, or anyone besides yourself? As best I can tell you're a "kept man" who sits around all day posting online and pursuing your hobbies. You seem like a very typical armchair quarterback (look it up), can't do anything yourself but are more than happy to criticize those who can (and are).

Really not sure what Gore has to do with Gates. You realize they are not the same person, right?

"Blah blah blah, I don't agree with how he made his money so anything he does with it is evil." Come on Coligny, pull your head out of your ass.

Gates doesn't have to give anyone anything yet he chooses to spend his time working for the poorest 2 billion and has donated huge amounts of his fortune towards his goals. Do you think he is trying to buy his way into some imaginary heaven or something? (Gates is almost certainly an atheist.)

Cost and risk, mostly.

Cost: To Low Earth Orbit it costs something around $10k per pound of payload. Completely escaping earth's gravity would cost considerably more.

Risk: This is speculation on my part but a rocket full of nuclear waste blowing up doesn't seem very planet-friendly.

There's also a much better use for all that waste. The video I linked to in a previous comment discusses this.

What you call "unnecessarily" is what I call safety precaution...

They are both pseudo philantropists, one got rich by killing other people's businesses, the other run a scam on top of the global warming crisis.

Now excuse me if I don't have to dig in a mine all day long. But I sincerly doubt this fact can have any kind of value against my position on these matters... And to be honest... Being questionned aboot what I do for the planet by someone advocating the restart of potentially dangerous nuclear powerplant is
FUCKING PRICELESS

You have a point but I wasn't talking about Japan but spent nuclear fuel in general. I'm sure some private company will eventually do it if it can be done for less than the current cost of disposal.

There is a big difference between not having to dig in a mine and not having to do fucking anything. Interestingly enough Gates doesn't have to do fucking anything either yet he chooses to spend his time working for the bottom 2 billion people of the planet, using the wealth he generated to do so. Funny how you call him scum yet think yourself to be just fine. There's scum there somewhere but it isn't Gates.

Coligny wrote:But I sincerly doubt this fact can have any kind of value against my position on these matters...

It has value because all you do is point at what other people do and criticize them. It makes you less than worthless because not only do you produce nothing yourself but you do your best to cut down those who do.

Coligny wrote:And to be honest... Being questionned aboot what I do for the planet by someone advocating the restart of potentially dangerous nuclear powerplant is FUCKING PRICELESS

Most of us don't live a cushy Life of Riley (something else for you to look up). In fact, most of us actually have to work for a living, and are generally dependent on the state of the Japanese economy. What is FUCKING PRICELESS is being told by someone who lives completely off his wife what would be best for Japan and the Japanese economy.

Go get a job and live in the real world for awhile Coligny. I doubt you could cut it.

Al Gore... yes, Bill Gates, no.

quite clear that this guy shoves ass loads of money for charity. Just cause he made a killing from M$ don't mean he is a pseudo philanthropist... he just made a fuck load of money for a product that he mad "mandatory" for the majority of the world. Bitch/complain/contradict all you want, but he did a lot for society, pushed money in several directions that didn't get him richer, and explained the fucked situation about energy way better than any politician/government could (would) do.

People questioning what you do is silly... but that is going to be the major argument for this subject..

Pro-nuclear bot: So what are you doing to reduce energy consumption? So you are like the rest of the jackasses who don't want the nukes but cannot comply and will result in rolling black outs?!?!?! There... you see... we need nuclear energy!

Anti-nuclear bot: Umm... nuclear power plants are bad um'kay... So we all should consume less energy... um'kay. How much of your daily/biz life have you sacrificed to reduce energy consumption? Bwahahahahahah! If you turned off your lights, unplugged everything in your house, blah blah blah, we would not need power plants!.!.!.! um'kay...
