Ministry Starts Dress-Down 'Super Cool Biz' To Save Power In Office
Image

TOKYO (Kyodo)--
The Environment Ministry on Friday started its "Super Cool Biz" campaign to promote energy saving at the workplace, broadening the type of acceptable clothing for its staff to Hawaiian shirts and sandals.

The campaign is a step beyond the "Cool Biz" practice introduced a month earlier, in which office employees typically work without ties and set air conditioners' thermostats at 28 C to save energy.

This is the second time the "Super Cool Biz" campaign has been implemented after last summer when the country faced an energy shortage following the Fukushima nuclear crisis in the wake of the March 11 quake and tsunami.

Japan has shut down all its nuclear reactors, which in fiscal 2010 accounted for 26.4 percent of power generation. This will be the first summer in 42 years with no operating nuclear reactor across the country.

Concerns over energy shortages are growing particularly in the western Japan region, including Osaka, Kyoto and Kobe cities, served by Kansai Electric Power Co., which had been relying heavily on nuclear power generation.

The government has been calling on residents to devise ways to live without being dependent on air conditioners.

In addition to Hawaiian shirts, the ministry has approved wearing polo shirts and untorn jeans at work. It also allows solid-color T-shirts and sandals, but undershirts and flip flops are banned.

Calls have also been made within the ministry for workers to start early and cut down on overtime.

Like last year, the ministry is planning Super Cool Biz through September and Cool Biz until the end of October.

The government is also promoting "Cool Share" steps such as running just one air conditioner at home for all family members getting together in a single room and escaping the heat by going to public venues such as library and museums.

They need to go further with Super Cool Biz for women. Here's what I would do:

Of course, this what we'd probably get in reality:

However, maybe introducing retro-Korean fashions might find favor somehow:

Why do people always feel the need to wear Aloha shirts? Just the other day the finance minister was wearing a shirt that made him look like he was from the Phillipines or some other such shithole.

They say that Japan is declining... For me, the adoption of these cheap looking shirts is but the next sorry tale in this nation's decline.

AC set at 28? Fuuuuuuuuu...company reaps the energy savings, few employees die and suffer from heat stroke. Sweatshop conditions? Chugoku mitai? I would suggest skipping the AC and just using fans in the office but then we all know how much this cuntry still does on paper...

Dreamy_Peach wrote:Why do people always feel the need to wear Aloha shirts?

THIS...even in uber casual America, Aloha shirts are frowned upon...but I digress, TIJ.

yep... aboot dat... when you set your ac to 28, usually you don't save any energy. Because you still use electricity but for no results whatsoever... (28 is not a surviveabul temperature...)

But hey... them yamato can lecture us all aboot them superiority

Hardly, unless people in your office can work one-handed while they fan themselves with the other. We had some busybody OL run around and set our AC to 28... which I promptly reset to 25. I'm not paying for sweat, I'm paying for good software.

The real problem is the performance-reducing open-office floor plans that J companies use: hard to save power when you're cooling places where no one sits.

I'm guessing he was talking about electric fans.

The real problem is poorly designed buildings with shitty air circulation and single pane windows.

Goddamn deteriorating eyesight! It was an "n," not a "p." I remember when I worked alone, I nearly always did it one-handed regardless of the temperature...

That would be pretty stupid. What's the point of poorly moving 28+ degrees of smelly air three feet away from a power socket?

None, but must admit that wither heating or cooling is usually much more efficient when a fan help circulate the air inside the room...

Japan’s Executives Swelter in Solidarity to Save Power
Bloomberg | 2012-08-13
...
research by the E.O. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory at the University of California and 23 other studies used by Cornell University to generate a productivity calculator on its ergonomics website. The calculator estimates that productivity at Cool Biz’s 82 degrees Fahrenheit (28C) would be almost 6 percent below levels at the ideal office temperature of 71 degrees Fahrenheit (21.7C)...more...

Yup, me julie duty fully set her aicon at 27 degrees this week end. "to save the planet and'shit like a gud japanese(*)"

I had to show her a thermometer so she understood that the temperature in the corridor with an opened window was also 27 degrees...

As usual, don't know if she's trolling...

If I were to set the office AC to the "ideal" temperature, my coworkers would be writhing on the floor complaining of stomach pain. Shit, I had to fight for 25.

I am all in favor of keeping temperatures at 28 degrees if that means mandatory Fool Biz attire is done away with and everybody walks around in the nude...(could be trouble on commuter trains, though, depending on who I'm crammed up against....mind you, at least they'd know pretty quickly whether I was enjoying the experience).

Snap. 28 with about 50% humidity is fine unless you insist on wearing full office regalia.
It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

Where is the study that shows the 28oC is the best temp? Or has it just been drummed into the local consciousness that people have stopped questioning it.

I want to fight this nonsense.
