Fast food service in Japan vs America: 2 videos tell the story

TOKYO —

The fast food experience in Japan is much different that it is in America.

In Japan, step into any fast food restaurant and you are treated with the kind of service you see in commercials. Polite and attentive staff work in seemingly perfect unison to get customers their meal as quickly as possible, all while maintaining a smile on their face.

In America, the reality isn’t so golden. Fast food staff are often uninspired and lack enthusiasm and, perhaps as one reason for that, the customers can be loud, obtrusive and sometimes even violent.

At least, this is the image people are getting from two YouTube videos that have been making the rounds in the Japanese net since this weekend.

The first video was taken by a foreigner inside of a McDonald’s in Osaka and shows a small unit of female staff keeping on their toes and moving through the line of customers like clockwork.

Whereas most foreign viewers praise the professionalism of the Japanese staff, many Japanese viewers actually seem to find it embarrassing that their people are so willing to jump through hoops for a measly 800 yen per hour.

...BIG SNIP...{Remember folks, use only short fair-use quotes not whole articles unless the source is going to quickly disappear---Taro}

Japanese love to follow weirdo work rules---Robotic following of kata型 is as close to Japanese have to a religion. If a customer something one millimeter outside the prescribed kata, Japanese brains start to smoke: Just try asking for catsup at your Makudonarudo without ordering french fries. :confused:

ya... even if you order like 4 things of fries, they only give you on package unless you ask for more... but then they pull some cheeky move and only give you one more...

Jesus Crispy Christ. That Sponge Bob commercial must have killed Happy Meal sales. I can't imagine a person wanting to buy that for their kids after seeing that CM.

I need an excuse to go out and see people... So it's daily combo trip hardware store/McDo...(*)

Plus I'm totally addicted to their crappy coffee... (no, really... there's something going on because I'm absolutely not a coffee person, much more a Jasmin tea kind of sloth. but these... months... I have uncontrolabul daily McCoffee cravingz...)

(* Yeah, I know, even the vet tells me I'm not going to last long if I keep like this.)

Sounds like you need a job outside the home or start volunteering at your local cat shelter.

A daily diet of McD's is not good for you mate. It is OK from time to time, but long term that shit will kill you. I don't mean to come off all preachy but you gots to take care of your health.

I like McD coffee because it's one of the last places you can order "a coffee please" and not have to think much, other than possibly size preference.

(Recent memories of standing in front of barista-infested stands in London while jetlagged trying to determine the appropriate phrase for "bog standard coffee, medium size" - i.e. "Hastalavista Moltogrande" or similar).

Still better than when I do my own stuff (with ground beef and bacon mixed together...)... Usually in 2 weeks of my self made diet, vitamin deficiency kicks in so bad that the corner of my mouth start to crack and bleed...
