She was kept in involuntary servitude for three months in 2009. A State Department employee, Linda Howard, had convinced the Yemeni woman to move to Japan with the promise of a job cleaning a home in the U.S. embassy compound in Tokyo for $200 a month. In December 2008 the woman agreed but only after she had been offered a raise to $300 dollars a month plus one day off every week.
After arriving on the job the victim ended up being raped and also had to work more than 80 hours per week.

$300 a month - 6 days a week. That is outrageous. Even if that was including room and board that is slave wages for anybody working in Japan. The going rate for a full time live in is around $180,000. This is the amount that would have to be on the contract allowing her to get a visa to be in Japan anyway.

Also, the amount that this woman was probably on as an expat package was probably huge dollars.

I assume that only if she was raped in the name of the US government, it will be US tax dollars. Otherwise it will be the rapist who pays.

What a bizarre case. One thing that's not clear from this article or a couple of other I've seen is where this woman was based before coming to Japan but I guess it was most likely Ethiopia since that's where Howard went looking for her. I guess where ever it was $300 a month plus room and board seemed like a great deal compared to what she could get there.
