China has dispatched two patrol ships to "assert its sovereignty" over islands at the centre of a row with Japan, state media said Tuesday, as Tokyo completed its purchase of the disputed territory.

The two marine surveillance ships had reached the waters around the Diaoyu islands -- known in Japan as the Senkaku islands -- and would "take actions pending the development of the situation," the Xinhua news agency said.

I say let the Japanese fend off for themselves until it gets out of hand... then we go in and fuck everything up.

Yay more war!

It is just a symbolic gesture by China.

No big repercussions.

That is, unless the J-government over-reacts...

They'll over react alright...it's more distraction from Fukashima and from their view, they are "defending Japanese territory." Not sure out of hand it will get but I expect some skirmishes...consider what China's been pulling in the Phillipines...

Well, the link you provide does not give much information. What I was looking for was information about China occupying Philippine islands. Supposedly there is some friction around the Spratly islands, but Choko's comment "consider what China's been pulling in the Phillipines..." sounds like they unilaterally occupied some islands of the Philippines. I am not aware of that, so if someone can educate me...

You don't have to occupy them to prevent others from doing so. The islands themselves are worthless, but as long as you can steam your naval vessels (or the Chinese equivalent of soundtrucks: "fishing" boats) around them often enough, you can bully others into accepting your tacit ownership of the EEZ.

I think the PRC has really made Lenin's words a reality: "The Capitalists will sell us the rope with which we will hang them." Note the irony in Zheng Bijian's "Peaceful Rise" tripe; once risen, will she stay peaceful? I think we can see she shall not.

Not sure how you got that from my quote. I guess I could have used IBM and Nazi Germany as an example, or how the British helped the Japanese develop superior naval aircraft pre-WW2.

Well, maybe it's just osmosis, but for some reason citing the bloke who gave his name to Marxist-Leninist kinda implied that to me.

cstaylor wrote: I guess I could have used IBM and Nazi Germany as an example, or how the British helped the Japanese develop superior naval aircraft pre-WW2.

I'm not surprised at IBM and the Nazis. People forget how strong the prewar support for the Nazis was in the English-speaking world (not quite as strong as in the Teutonic-, French- or Afrikaans-speaking sectors, but..), particularly the U.S., and that even in the dying days of the war there was some consideration given to rearming a Germany bereft of Hitler and having a go at the Russians (Operation Unthinkable). It's a nasty little skeleton in all our closets.

Less surprised at the British link with Japan. They were allies and would have remained that way had it not been for pressure from the U.S. Australia, which regarded itself as a British outpost until like 2012 and beyond, has a deep debt to the Imperial Japanese Navy, but that was forgotten in the wake of what happened in the 1940s (incidentally, when the Japanese launched hundreds of air raids on the Australian mainland in 1942 they dropped bombs made using pig iron Australia had only shortly before sold to Japan after it had invaded China proper).

The "special relationship" between Britain and the U.S. is nothing more than expediency on both sides, aided by the fact that they both kinda speak the same language.

When Japanese porn belongs to the entire world

Sola Aoi’s Viral Call for Sino-Japanese Peace

Image

One enduring advantage Japan has enjoyed when facing calls inside China for boycotts of Japanese goods, such as those that could be heard between bouts of egg throwing at protests outside the Japanese embassy in Beijing on Saturday, is the general fondness Chinese consumers have for Japanese brands.

Now one Japanese “brand” with a particularly fervent following in China – former porn star Sola Aoi – has taken it upon herself to try to calm tensions between the two East Asian powers.

With anti-Japanese vitriol turning increasingly violent in China following Japan’s announcement that it planned to purchase the disputed Senkaku islands, Ms. Aoi lit up China’s social media switchboards on Friday by suggesting in a pair of posts that everyone should just try to get along.

“I hope all of us regular people can have good relations… I am a regular person like all of you. Wounded…” she wrote on her verified account on Sina Corp.’s Weibo microblogging service, attaching an image of hand-painted Chinese characters that read “Japanese-Chinese friendship.”

A few minutes later, perhaps thinking twice after an initial flurry of protests from her fans, she posted another image, this time with the characters amended to read “Friendship between Chinese and Japanese people.”

A group of small, uninhabited islands in the East China Sea, the Senakaku are administered by Japan but claimed by China and Taiwan. In China, they are known as the Diaoyu islands. Tensions over the islands have been rising steadily since April, when Tokyo mayor Shintaro Ishihara began discussing the idea of purchasing some of them from their private owners.

At a time when Chinese owners of Toyotas and Hondas are plastering their cars with anti-Japanese messages to avoid having them smashed by unhinged protesters, and when Japanese people have to worry about being assaulted with bowls of ramen noodles while walking Chinese streets, such a plain gesture from a retired adult film actress might not seem particularly noteworthy.

But Ms. Aoi is not your average retired adult film actress. A megastar throughout Asia, she boasts more than 13 million followers on Sina Weibo and is popular enough in China that the country’s film and TV regulator singled her out in announcing new restrictions on “vulgar” content in April (to which she responded with a defiant picture of herself in dress).

Image

Ms. Aoi’s call for calm has certainly been heard: By Saturday afternoon, the two posts combined had been forwarded more than 110,000 times and attracted more than 150,000 comments – a viral performance even by China’s high standards.

How much of her audience got the message is another question.

To be sure, some of the actress’s Chinese fans on the site supported her, in many cases by simply forwarding or repeating the call for friendship. Others, however, were more conflicted. “Although I like you and support your work, in the end I am Chinese,” one fan wrote in response. “On territorial disputes, I will never back down!”

“I deeply suspect you’re a spy,” wrote another, perhaps thinking of Yoshiko Kawashima, a beguiling Manchurian princess also known as Jin Bihui who infamously served as a spy for the Japanese during World War II and later became a celebrity in Japanese-occupied parts of China.

Many responded with outrage — often using language not fit to publish on a family-friendly news website – but an equal number seemed keen to enjoy Ms. Aoi and have their islands, too. “The Diaoyu islands belong to China, Sola Aoi belongs to the entire world,” went one commonly repeated refrain.

Ms. Aoi was not the only popular microblogger to challenge the convictions of China’s Japan-bashers. In a separate post that has also gone viral on Sina Weibo, commentator Zuoyeben posited a pair of theoretical dilemmas: “If Japanese people attack and there’s a Japanese gun on the ground, would you or would you not pick it up and return fire?” he asked, adding another: “Say you have a child, and there are only two types of milk powder – one made in China, the other made in Japan. Which would you chose?”

Responses to that post – like responses to Ms. Aoi’s – were passionately mixed, with many forced to admit that the poisoned reputation of Chinese dairy products would make it a difficult choice.

While it’s not clear what, if any, impact either of the posts will have in defusing anti-Japanese rhetoric, responses to Ms. Aoi suggests plenty of Internet users have bigger priorities than discussing the latest flare-up over disputed territory.

Take, for example, Sina Weibo user Rubber Demon Fruit, who reacted to Ms. Aoi’s diplomatic toe-dip, not with an angry demand that she reveal her position on who should control the Senkaku, but with a far more fundamental question: “May I ask, when is your new movie coming out?”

Anti-Japan protests spread across China, turn violent
Senkaku row sparks largest rallies since ties normalized

More than 70,000 Chinese staged rallies Saturday in at least 28 cities to protest Japan's nationalization of a group of disputed islets, with Japanese businesses in some areas broken into, ransacked and torched.

The sheer scale of the protests was the largest since China and Japan normalized diplomatic ties in 1972, and surpassed the outcry in 2005 triggered by Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's visits to war symbol Yasukuni Shrine, according to a diplomatic source in Beijing.
* * *

"Protect the Diaoyu Islands" and "Slap economic sanctions on Japan."
"Down with Japan! Long live China!" some chanted.
"Japan is shameless, they took advantage of us. Chinese people should stand united," he said.

5 LDP candidates, in 2nd debate, push for hard line with China

Five candidates vying to lead Japan’s top opposition party, and possibly become the next prime minister, are calling for Japan to get tough with China in an escalating territorial dispute.

The candidates—including former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, former Defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba and party secretary general Nobuteru Ishihara—slammed China in a debate Saturday ahead of the Liberal Democratic Party’s presidential election, scheduled for Sept 26.

They called for Japan to bolster its control of disputed East China Sea islands, saying they are Japan’s inviolable sovereign territory. They also discussed Japan’s sagging economy and its plan to phase out nuclear power.

Analysts believe the LDP could win big in upcoming parliamentary elections. If it does, whoever wins the party leadership race could become Japan’s next prime minister.

Oh, and this:

Protesters shout slogans at a march denouncing South Korea and China in Tokyo on Saturday. About 70 demonstrators gathered to denounce South Korean President Lee Myung-bak’s call for Emperor Akihito to go beyond expressing “deepest regrets” for Japan’s 1910-1945 colonial rule last month. They also criticized China which sent six Chinese surveillance ships yesterday to waters near disputed islands, known as Senkaku in Japanese and Diaoyu in Chinese, amid growing tension between Asia’s two biggest economies over the disputed islands.

Starting to get nastier...

The protests focused mainly on Japanese diplomatic missions but also targeted shops, restaurants and car dealerships in at least five cities. Toyota and Honda reported arson attacks had badly damaged their stores in Qingdao.

Japanese electronics group Panasonic said one of its plants had been sabotaged by Chinese workers and would remain closed through Tuesday — a memorial day in China when it marks the anniversary of Japan’s 1931 occupation of parts of mainland China.
