Japan to start random body searches at airports in October
Kyodo

The transport ministry said Thursday it will start conducting random body searches on international passengers at 29 airports across the country in October to prevent explosives from slipping through metal detectors.

At present, body searches are only performed on passengers who set off metal detectors before boarding, the Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Ministry. The ministry did not elaborate on how the body searches would be carried out or by whom.

The ministry is taking the step because terrorist plots involving the use of liquid or solid explosives have been reported in Britain and the United States. It did not say if it was referring to recent events.

The International Civil Aviation Organization recommends that countries conduct random contact inspections or full-body scans on passengers to enhance security.

I can only assume that by conducting more random body searches on international passengers, they mean non-Japanese looking ones. North Korean terrorists must be thanking their Kimchi Gods for this glorious policy. Death to America and snivelling Japanese allies!!

Being naive and innocent, I interpreted "international passengers" to mean "passengers on international flights" (as opposed to domestic flights).

A country where every morning start with checking the Ntl Meteo website for earthquake, volcano activity, lanslides, typhoon, tsunamis and radioactiv release levels DO NOT QUALIFY AS "SAFE COUNTRY".

I would contribute a bit of the war fund to a class action lawsuit against the J-gov for violating article 14.

Kind of sad that the Japanese want to be associated with these countries, they still haven't got over their 20th century inferiority complex.

I will say this which is semi on the topic. Hoping I don't jinx myself, but every time I come into this cuntry via Narita, I get far less hassle at customs than any of the J-peeps.

You don't look like a mule

I think the real reason for this policy is they have a serious drugs problem, but don't like to admit to it in public.

If that's the case considering the track record of random loonies with knives in this country they might be onto something.

Nah. Think about how frequently you see junkies on the streets in the West and look at here. If a cuntry does have a serious drug problem, it's hard to hide.

The worst is that nobody is calling their bullshit anymore. They can make up whatever they want and say "because fuck you" and everything will be ok...

Certainly there are some issues and I have no doubt that the Japanese government downplays the problem to a an extent, but I have to agree with SDH that the lack of junkies in the street and the low rate of the kind of crimes associated with wide-spread abuse would indicate the problem here is not as bad as it is in a lot of other places.
