South Korean host bars - for women
South Korea's rapid economic development has meant some startling changes within its conservative social structure, including the rise of so-called host bars, where wealthy women pay the equivalent of thousands of dollars for male company.

In the dim light of an underground room, a dozen perfectly groomed young men kneel in rows, calling out their names.

Muscular, with shiny boy-band hairstyles, they cram side by side into the narrow space, waiting for us to make our choice. Outside in the corridor, more of their colleagues are arriving for another night at work. It is 2am, and we are their first customers.

Hidden beneath the pavements of Seoul's ritziest postcode, Gangnam, the men at Bar 123 are part of a growing industry, which grew out of the long traditions of Japanese geisha and Korea's kisaeng houses but with one crucial difference - the customers here are all women.

Known as "host bars", these all-night drinking rooms offer female customers the chance to select and pay for male companions, sometimes at a cost of thousands of pounds a night.

One of my Korean friends took me to "Karaoke" in K-town last month. It was weird and something they swear they invented. Was basically lots of booze in a big karaoke room and one by one, girls would come in and smile, then storm out 10 seconds later if noone motioned for them to come over and take a seat next to them. Basically hostess karaoke? All I know is I cracked up once the clock hit 2am (booze no longer sold/served past this point in California) and my friend pulled 20 big ass bottles of beer from beneath the table. Something tells me he's been there before.

When I was in saipan the "karaoke" bars were just fronts for hostess joints. Didn't go in so not sure if these were really strip clubs or brothels either but I had my suspicions. The whole town was set up for when the US navy ships were in town.

The way the security was made it seem like basically to hook up with whores...but the guys I was with said they were just "girlfriends for the time you're there" and not whores. No idea but they had special ordered some cancer stick huffing, fat phillipina bitch for me before we went :( I was more focused on getting drunk than talking to her. (and she was none too happy when I called her out on being tubby)

In Korea you can always pay those places some extra cash to take the girl to a hotel. I wonder if it's the same in Okubo.

If you ever get a chance, go to the topless karaoke hostess bars in Korea. They're a lot of fun. They send in groups of young attractive chicks and each guy chooses the one he likes. Then all the girls strip down to their panties (all the customers strip down to their underwear too for some reason) and it's 2 hours of snacks, all you can drink, karaoke, and titty touching for a fixed price. I think it was about 200 bucks a head which was a good deal consider how much you drink, the quality of the women, and what happens the last 15 minutes of your set.

oh...and

http://www.calgaryherald.com/news/calga ... story.html

CALGARY - A Calgary karaoke club has issued an apology after coming under fire for putting up a sign indicating Japanese customers would not be served.

“We apologize for any confusion and misunderstanding regarding not welcoming any Japanese customers,” Lips KTV and Club karaoke wrote on its Facebook page.

“We haven’t and will never refuse any Japanese customers. From the beginning since Lips was opened till now, we’ve had plenty of Japanese customers. Canada is a multicultural country and we will not judge anyone by their race, cultural or regional background.”

A manager at the bar at 1130 10th Ave S.W. told the Herald she was off duty and partying with Japanese customers Saturday night when she got drunk, grabbed a sign normally used to display drink specials and wrote in Chinese: “Diaoyu Islands belong to China. Temporarily not serving Japanese people.”
