New iPhone's default mapping software displays facilities at wrong sites
Mainichi News | 2012/09/22
...
iPhone 5 of Apple Inc. has been struggling to fix the popular smartphone's new default iOS6 mapping application, which many users said was displaying some facilities at wrong places and had other errors.
As of the evening of Sept. 21, the new Maps app, developed by Apple itself, showed Hibiya High School on the premises of the Prime Minister's Office in Tokyo, while the company "Daio Paper" appeared in an area that is actually Haneda Airport. It also erroneously displayed a fictitious "Pachinko Gundam Station" as one of the stations on the JR Ome Line in Tokyo's Akishima...more...

The Silver Lining

Postby Russell » Sun Sep 23, 2012 11:50 am

Apple maps disaster may solve China-Japan islands dispute

Apple’s new iPhone 5 may have been criticized for its glitch-ridden new maps program, but it may have inadvertently provided a diplomatic solution to China and Japan’s ongoing row over disputed islands.

The new smartphone, which has dumped Google Maps in favor of its own version, has been ridiculed for misplacing major landmarks, shifting towns and even creating a new airport.

But amid a row over an outcrop of islands claimed by both Tokyo and Beijing, Apple’s new iO6 software has provided a resolution of sorts.

When a user searches for the Tokyo-controlled Senkaku islands in the East China Sea, claimed by Beijing under the name Diaoyu, two sets of the islands appear alongside each other.

“The map has one set of islands for each country. Is this a message from Apple that we civilians must not get engaged in a pointless dispute?” one Japanese blogger wrote.

The new mapping program was released this week as part of Apple’s updated mobile operating system software, which powers the new iPhone 5, released Friday, and can be installed as an upgrade on other Apple devices.

To the chagrin of many, the new operating system replaces Google Maps, which had been the default mapping system in Apple devices until now.

As of yet there is no stand-alone Google Maps app available for the iPhone, although some reports say this is coming.

Offline maps rule!
Like you I have a WiFi only iPad because there's no way I am going to pay the fucktards at Softbank 5000yen/m (or even the discounters at 3700yen/m) to surf for LOL Cats and maps.

Why would you PAY online connection changes for free maps? Do you pay for using GPS in your car?

(As I said before, I refuse to pay 5000yen/m (or even the discounters at 3700yen/m) for a smartphone connection, Yeah, yeah, I own both Android and iPhone units, which I get turned on temporally for testing purposes. However for my personal use, I just have a crappy dumbphone keitai that costs me 600yen/m and for data/maps/surfing I use free WiFi connections with my iPad, iTouch or ASUS netbook.)

Me and me whip sumtimes manage to get lost in places where neither AU/kddi, softbank or even NTT have signals...

Plus, in Japan, you have more chance to have the whole phone/mobile phone infrastucture going down in an "event" than the GPS or GLONASS sat falling out of the sky...

I've got this carbon-based dedicated offline "map app" I carry around all the time. Costs a few hundred yen, and the only way to update it is to buy a new one every couple of years, but it doesn't need any batteries and will still work even if all networks are down. 8-)

me too, I've ridden the length and breadth of this country using those

In the UK the emergency services keep having to rescue people who get lost when their batteries run out halfway up a mountain.

That's what your brain is for (and road numbers, junction names, road names, village names, those signs on utility poles). When in doubt keep going straight and sooner or later you get somewhere.

RANT STARTS
Next time you ride the train put your portable distraction device away, better still, switch it off, and look around you, the level of addiction is getting pretty serious. Everybody has the same phone made by different companies, and they are all doing the same thing, gazing at it like rabbits staring into the headlights of the car that never comes.
RANT ENDS

What happened?

In Japan... fucking with me right ? I have better luck with VFR maps and a compass than with any road map on this shithole...

as for the train when i don't check for the landscape or p00nscape i read ebooks... no reason to carry deadtree version around...

Am thinking that Google will release their mapping app soon at $50 or so and make a fortune!!

The irony is that Apple will make a fortune as well as they will get their 30% cut on app sales.

here in the land of four seasons the biggest "hayfever" causes are mold, rice and soil (dust). The locals would lead you to believe that rape, the plant, is the biggest cause but there is, of-course, zero scientific data to back up their claims.

"J-system of longitude & latitude differs slightly"

Postby Taro Toporific » Wed Sep 26, 2012 4:03 pm

"Japan uses a system of longitude and latitude that differs slightly" WTF!?~!?
Apple Maps Errors Send Japanese to Homegrown App
NYTimes.com | September 24, 2012
...
Mapion is one of Japan’s homegrown companies that is benefiting from Apple’s maps debacle, which has left local owners of the new iPhone 5 flummoxed over erroneous place names, long-outdated landmarks and train stations that appear to hover in the middle of the sea...Yasunori Yamagishi, who runs Mapion’s development team...
the biggest problem with Apple’s map, Mapion’s Mr. Yamagishi said, is that much of its data appears to be drawn from OpenStreetMap Japan, a Wikipedia-like service that contains a lot of incorrect and outdated information.
Moreover, Japan uses a system of longitude and latitude that differs slightly from the global standard, and Apple may have mixed up data sources that use the two systems, Mr. Yamagishi said.
At certain points, the difference between the Japanese and international coordinate systems can come to as much as 450 meters (1,476 feet), according to Japan’s Land Ministry.
