Knocked up, knocked out - who knows anymore what is the right or wrong way to say things.

I have not lived in Australia for so long, I have no idea what is current or correct in Strine - but this is just how I have always said something that I have built.

But as most people know, I am often wrong about stuff.. :cry2:

Sounds fine to my British English self (though that is almost 20 years out of date).

Different meaning if the object is a person, of course.

Back on topic, my 18-month old iPod touch has iOS 4.3.something, and works fine for. Should I be hanging my head in shame and hang up my tech hat because it's two major releases behind?

Ya - true.

But to be honest, I just typed "knocked up" without thinking so it must be what I have always said. It could be wrong and I have been making a complete arse outta myself for the last 40 years. Thinking about it, "knocked out" is more common I guess. Perhaps our resident Strine expert can weigh in on this one.

If it ain't broke mate - no need to update it.

But there are some cool new features available for iOS 5 users. iCloud etc.

But just read through my page and decide for yourself if you need to save out the binaries as Apple are really making it impossible for us to support iOS3/4. Am guessing they want to sell more hardware... maybe... perhaps.. whaddya reckon?

She's not dead but she had to have a double mastectomy.

Coligny,

To get things back on topic using Google maps via Safari on the iPhone sucks balls big time so once again your point is a failure.

What the cell phone does for the economy

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2012-09-26/inflation-americans-spend-less-food-movies-pay-soaring-cell-phone-obsession

iNflation: Americans Spend Less On Food, Movies To Pay For Soaring Cell Phone Obsession

As America's mania with cell phones as an aspirational status fad hits new records every day, this borderline addiction to "thinner, longer" mobility and a sub-1 year upgrade cycle, is starting to extract its pound of flesh: average cell phone bills that have risen by over 10% in one year (from $1,110 to $1,226), even as total household spending rose by half, or $67. In a word: iNflation. It gets worse. As the WSJ reports, "spending on food away from home fell by $48, apparel spending declined by $141, and entertainment spending dropped by $126." Like a true faux status/gadget junkie, Americans don't care what other discretionary items are cut, even such "American staples" as eating out and watching movies, just so they can keep up with all the other Joneses sporting a brand new iPhone X+1, while everyone's credit card bill just gets larger and larger, and the collective wealth evaporates.

Apple cripples 3rd party browsers by:

  1. Forcing all browsers on the iPhone to use Safari's rendering engine.
  2. Not allowing users to select the default browser of their choice. Click on a link in Mail and it will always open in Safari.
  3. Blocking 3rd party browsers (and all other 3rd party apps) from the high-speed "Nitro" JavaScript engine

Nothing can be done about #1 unless Apple decides to allow proper 3rd party browsers (zero chance really).

If your iPhone or iPad is Jailbroken though you can fix #2 and #3 yourself:

#2 is fixed by the free Cydia app BrowserChooser. Add the repo rpetri.ch/repo and then search for BrowserChooser.

#3 is fixed via a 99cent paid app from Cydia called Nitrous. Just search and buy.

You can create a US iTunes account for downloading free apps without a credit card. Here's how. That said, I have no idea how good (or bad) the Bing Maps app is for Japan.

Apple doesn't exactly give them a whole lot of choice in the matter. ;)

Enabling the Nitro JavaScript engine improves JavaScript performance on 3rd party browsers by 3x to 4x. Definitely worth the 99 cents.

After a bunch of pissing around and iTunes going on about computer authorizations I was able to get the Bing app onto my 4S. Initial impressions:

  1. It's very fast. Zooming is fast and so are screen loads.
  2. It definitely has more information than the Apple iOS6 Maps app. Roads seem accurate. Stations are all there, exit numbers, that sort of thing.
  3. It doesn't have anywhere near the information that is on Google Maps (not surprising as this isn't even supposed to be available in Japan.)

I haven't tried directions, transit, or stuff like that. Not sure if it exists. Will play more later and update.

Typical miserable bullshit that we should not have to put up with... apple or not... (not as bad as EA though)

BTW FGL... greena snotta for Nitrous... b00mbastic tweak... (but again, bullsh!t that we should not have to put up with). Anything done against the competition also harming the customers should be dealt with termination of job contracts for some people... When Job was doing this...at least their was so much positive things also done that it could be balanced...

Nowadays... not so much anymore...

Agreed. I've bought the iPhone until now because the things work so damn well. Near perfect balance between hardware & software and awesome industrial design as well.

Things have slipped though -- I really couldn't see SJ having allowed the current Maps debacle. If it was possible to fix these things with jailbreak tweaks I wouldn't mind so much but they have decided to do their best to make it impossible to jailbreak the new chips. Add into this Softbank's refusal to unlock the iPhone and Docomo's superior network and the Samsung phones are starting to look pretty damn good.

Been thinking about my above "SJ and the Maps debacle" comment.

SJ let "mobile me" be released and that was a colossal turd. Add in things like Apple's Ping social network failure and it starts to look like Apple really isn't that good with web services. They do the iTunes store well but that's more an eCommerce site than a web service so I don't think it really counts.

It's definitely an area where Google performs far better than Apple does.

yeah, the only thing worth having was the iDisk, convenient back up, storage and file transfer, and they ditched it in preference for stuff you don't need. They obviously realised that storing data was a responsibility and the servers cost money to run.
