Skeletons found in car in Japanese reservoir

AFP-Jiji-Japan Times | Wednesday, Sep. 12, 2012
A pair of skeletons have been found in a car at the bottom of a reservoir in Fukuoka Prefecture, 17 years after two brothers disappeared while out for a drive in the area, police said Tuesday.
Highway workers found the remains when they drained the reservoir during a land survey in the town of Koge.
"We are trying to confirm if the accident was related to the disappearance of two brothers in 1995"...more...

This headline made me piss myself laughing (or, maybe I'm just getting old and losing bowel control?)
Classic! Thanks Taro.

I wonder if they have anything to do with Futoshi Matsunaga, any mention of whom seems to have become taboo in Japan? (I doubt it because Matsunaga operated in Kitakyushu, but you never know...)

"In October 1995, a 20-year-old man and his 18-year-old brother went missing after they went for a drive from their parents' home in the nearby city of Usa."

Ah, good ol' Usa, the land of "Made in USA" Japanese products.

I hadn't seen the news today, but this is my neck of the woods.
They probably drained the reservoir for construction of a new highway that is being built.

English signs in Usa are popular with visiting foreigners - "USA, Japan".

It is not a drinking water reservoir, isn't it?

Just asking...

No, all the reservoirs around here are for irrigating mostly the rice fields.
I don't know this particular reservoir, but for most of them, it would be pretty hard to drive a car in and not leave a trace.
The only thing that comes to mind is the car must have flown off the road at high speed.
And, all the reservoirs around here that I know of partially dry up, so this one must have been quite deep.

According to news reports the reservoir in question is 皿塚池 (at a guess Sarazuka-ike?). Can't find it on a map mind. Google image search has some pictures, it looks fairly small.

The only info I can find is this web site, which contains a pic of their car (anyone knows what type of car it is?)

and a map.

And then there is this pic, the website of which which has apparently disappeared.

Good to know they were accompanied by some pretty birds those 17 lonely years...

This all got me in a philosophical mood.

I mean, just imagine how different Japan would be if they would not have disappeared...

Someone else who's been spending time in a car in the wet part of a body of water:

2.5L Inline 6 but it comes in manual, is fun enough for the track, yet big enough for cargo/kids/dead bodies/etc.
