Shameless Plug - New iOS dictionary - Sakura

We have just released a new iOS app. Sakura Dictionary

This is using the EDICT data and the first iOS app we have released with this. Sure there are plenty of apps using EDICT out there but ours is 85 yen and also ours is using our UniDict Engine which is pretty fucking awesome.

Most of our other UniDict apps are between ¥1,000 - ¥5,000 so this is a good way for you to experience our technology without forking out for one of our flagship titles.

We haven't included all the UniDict bells and whistles in this app - not going to give away the farm completely - but there is enough there to get a feel for our stuff.

Is it available in the US store? Someone was just asking me for a J/E dictionary yesterday and I suggested the app formerly known as Kotoba. I will try this out, even though I am a J/E dictionary. Hehe.

kana only. No romaji.

Nope - what do you expect for 85 yen?

Yes of course. There are plenty of E-J dictionaries using EDICT with various levels of features and functionality - and price. EDICT is free to use which is why lots of eager solo devs cut their teeth on it.

Ours is not the cheapest, doesn't have the most features or functionality but is just rounding out our suite of UniDict titles. All UniDict titles work together and lots of customers have more than one. This is certainly the cheapest UniDict dictionary title we have made so it is a good intro into the engine. The top end functions like iCloud etc have not been enabled in this app either - again, what do you want for 85yen?

At least... as much as what free software was doing 10 years or so ago...

Guess that why I suck at capitalism...

FYI, Kotoba changed it's name to imiwa?

There's a work around that's a little clumsy but free.

Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards > Add New Keyboard.

Add "Chinese - Tradition Handwriting" and "Chinese - Simplified Handwriting" . You need both since the Japanese use both traditional and simplified Kanji depending on the character.

I'm... no longer aiming for "free only"...

I pay my software... and never felt so assraped i mah entire life... Driver San Francisco was a marvel... you can't go past the menu... there is nothing else than the 1.0 release, and all the tech sup tells you is that they don't support anything else than apple usb keyboard and mouse, everything else must be unplugged and no other driver installed. That's the most beautifull "fuck you sucker" i evar received... (meanwhile the editor of Bus Driving SImulator and Euro Truck Sim took 1 week to fix 0 day release bugs, and now continue to update to always add more controller support...)

But for the Japanese dictionnary, the feature list is not always... evident... and I have yet to find one who has his own kanji character recognition. So for now it's the absolutely excellent "imiwa" whose phonetic word recognition is marvellous, or CamDictionnary, to read kanji in shops, but works well only on matt surface, black characters on white BG... reading the fancy yellow on blue text on the shiny side of some paint buckitt was totally out of his reach...

Hence, 'the app formerly known as'.
Imiwa is an awful name.
