Petty Officer 2nd Class Samuel Lewis Stiles (25)

Postby TennoChinko » Mon Oct 29, 2012 9:49 pm

This one also gets nominated for the Darwin Awards. Dumbass sailor breaks curfew, gets drunk, climbs on top of a JR train and electrocutes himself....

Sasebo sailor found dead at Japanese train station

Published: October 29, 2012

SASEBO NAVAL BASE, Japan —
A Sasebo-based sailor — possibly breaking a curfew for U.S. servicemembers in Japan — was found dead Sunday morning at a train station, according to Japanese police.

A worker found Petty Officer 2nd Class Samuel Lewis Stiles, 25, lying face down on a platform at Japan Railways’ Haiki station in Sasebo city about 5 a.m., a Haiki police spokesman said Monday, adding that cause of death was under investigation. Japanese media reported he fell and hit his head after climbing atop a train, where he was electrocuted by an overhead power line.

Five or six empty cans of a Japanese cocktail were found nearby, but police have to conduct a blood test to determine if he had been drinking, the spokesman said. Stiles lived off base and did not have identification on him, so police queried various places, including Sasebo Naval Base.

Officials from Commander Naval Forces Japan would not confirm Stiles’ name until his family had been notified but said a sailor on shore duty at Sasebo had died. They declined to comment if he was breaking curfew.

“There will be an investigation obviously,” Commander Naval Forces Japan spokesman Jon Nylander said.

Police said that when Stiles was found, his forehead had been bleeding and part of his windbreaker was burnt. There were no signs of violence.

Workers last checked the train station before it closed Saturday night and Stiles was not there at the time, the police spokesman said. Police could not comment on the time of the check, but Japanese media reported it occurred around 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

The 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew for all U.S. servicemembers in Japan was imposed Oct. 19 in response to the alleged assault and rape of an Okinawan woman by two U.S. Navy sailors.

U.S. sailor found dead at train station in Japan
From Junko Ogura, CNN
October 29, 2012 -- Updated 1153 GMT (1953 HKT)

Tokyo (CNN) --
A U.S. Navy sailor has been found dead with a head injury at a Japanese train station, local police said Monday.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Samuel Lewis Stiles was discovered surrounded by seven or eight alcoholic drink cans on the platform in Haiki Station in Nagasaki Prefecture at 5 a.m. Sunday, Haiki police said.

The death, which police say they are investigating as either an accident or a crime, comes at a delicate time for the U.S. military in Japan after two U.S. sailors were arrested earlier this month on accusations they raped a local woman.

That case provoked an angry reaction from Japanese officials, and the U.S. military responded by imposing a curfew on its troops in Japan. The curfew restricted military personnel to bases, personal homes or hotels between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.

The time at which Stiles's body was found suggests he may have been out in breach of this curfew.

He was wearing civilian clothes, not uniform, and didn't have any personal belonging around him, police said. Stiles was stationed at the U.S. base in Sasebo, the city in Nagasaki where Haiki Station is situated.

Just found out that a poster on the Straight Dope bulletin board by the name of Autolycus passed away November 5. He was currently working as an ALT with JET up in Aomori.

I haven't confirmed his real name yet.

Word is that he died in his sleep.

That Straightdope thread is rather prophetic foreshadowing like our own dead member Ismetony's tagline, "I'm friggin toasted again!"

To be fair to the recently dead, the youtube was posted by someone else, and I had another post of his in mind when I made mine. I leave it a challenge to the bored and curious to work out which one. As he tells it, he was pretty handy in the kitchen.

Yeah, I remember that one. As for the Dope, I haven't been active there since about three years ago, but I peek in once in a while and skim the forum topics.

This was really a shocking one, he was a young guy.

I've been remotely acquainted with two people who simply died in their sleep - both male, 20s, no known illnesses, addictions etc.

Sorry, but as the personal assistant to a Cook County Coroner of Chicago* (my grandfather) for more than four years, we would automatically flag "people who simply died in their sleep - both male, 20s, no known illnesses" as Suspicious Deaths.

* Think of the hospital of the movie, The Fugitive,
that's where my grandfather and I worked, circa 1969.

From what I've seen of Chicago in films and TV series, I'd imagine basically any death would be suspicious until proved otherwise.

I personally know two guys that have died in their sleep. One was early 30's and one was early 40's. Both were alone at the time. One was certainly an aneuryism and the other one was unknown.

So it just goes to say, it is always best to sleep with somebody else... it makes sure that the body will be discovered quickly and you won't smell up the place.

You'll need it. While you're banging your way through China and Vietnam, a truck will be heading down to Toyohashi to clean out your residential haikyo.
