Yeah, it got off to a pretty big jump. One thing I've noticed since 3-11 is the change in the attitude of the locals. Before when there was a quake people in the office would just chuckle and say Oh, jishin da. Now they stop talking, freeze up and brace themselves just in case it ends up being a big one.

One of my co-workers experienced the Kobe one, she was out of the country for 3/11 but has one of those alarm apps on her PC, and every time a fish farts off the Tohoku coast it's panic time  ...

Admittedly I do take ones like this more seriously than I used to.

Probably depends on the settings. I think my wife's is set fairly low..

It's just an app for the iPhone. As Coligny mentioned http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/yurekuru-call/id398954883?mt=8

Meanwhile for those of you sleeping soundly in your beds west of Tokyo, those nice people at the Cabinet Office are predicting up to 320,000 deaths should the Nankai Trough start strutting its stuff.

Japan Today wrote:Gov't projects 320,000 deaths in event of earthquake in Nankai Trough

The government on Wednesday unveiled a worst case disaster scenario warning that a magnitude 9 earthquake in the Nankai Trough off Japan’s Pacific Coast could kill over 320,000 people, dwarfing last year’s quake-tsunami disaster.

According to the projections released by the Cabinet Office, up to 320,000 people could be killed in 30 prefectures by tsunami generated by a massive earthquake in the trough which stretches for 750 kilometers from Kanto to Kyushu.

The projections were based on a scenario in which a quake strikes at nighttime during the winter with strong winds helping to unleash tsunami up to 34 meters high, sweeping many victims away as they slept.

...more... (warning: Japan Today link)

Never understand the point of these studies (except to provide otherwise idle taxpayer-funded desk jockeys with an excuse to look as though they're doing something productive and worthwhile).

Why don't they do predictions on what's going to happen when Japan needs to start paying off its public debt or how many bureaucrats will lose their jobs when China tells Japan to get down on its knees and atone? Just as realistic and about as scientifically viable as earthquake damage predictions (because they've always been so accurate until now, too...)

LOL, I classify this with other Japanese superstitions....blood type, etc. It may occasionally prove to be right but even a broken clock is right twice a day. Tokyo is going to be a fucking deathtrap, no doubt about it, but they won't need any help from a tsunamis to attain death toll #'s like that.

Me that would be the 10:12 explosion... I have to patch the porcelain with fiberglass again... as usual... in a moment of optimism I brushed my teeth using tap water... Lucky I bought one of those car protection sheets made from rubberish foam (to protect from dog shitting themselves or sea diver that don't remove their wetsuite before driving -no really these people seems to exist-) so I can drive and shit myself in full confidence... The number of times I dropped the whip in the parking with engine still on to rush to the loo was reaching 3 digits...

Gawd, I'm getting good at this - my guesses for the location (Fukushima-oki) , approximate magnitude (5 ~ 6) and maximum shindo (4 - 5jaku) of the one we just had were almost spot on
