Antonio Inoki has officially announced that he is a Muslim.
After entering the faith, Antonio choose the Islamic name of Mohammed Hussein.
Born in 1943, he had a significant impact in the world of professional wrestling and martial arts of Japan. in 2010, Mr. Inoki was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in the United States.

Inoki, who converted to Islam in 1990, said that he decided to become a Muslim upon his visit to Karbala (the site of Prophet Muhammad’s (pbuh) grandson’s shrine) and the holy mosque.
"When I converted, people suggested that I change my name to Muhammad Ali but I turned down the idea as I had already fought against the great boxer Ali."
He then decided to go with Hussain, which was derived from the then Iraqi president Saddam Hussein.

Can Japanese legally change their names in Japan? I was under the impression they could only do so at marriage and even then it was limited. Of course there are always tsumeisho but still...how else are they gonna keep the zainichi and burakumin in their places?

Outside of marriage, you need to apply to the Family Court for approval, and applications in order are generally granted except if there are reasonable grounds for refusal (such as attempting to avoid debt or criminal justice, etc.) Surprise, surprise, the main reason that it's not undertaken more often is that it's an onerous proposition that costs time (several months at best) and money (at least about 130,000 yen in court costs and more if using some form of legal advisor <gyosei shoshi, etc.> to help you). What's more, you may be required to list both names on some documents even after the change is approved. Like anything to do with the Japanese judicial system, the only winner is the status quo.
