アメリカ人の会社員の男が17日未明、東京・世田谷区で乗車したタクシーの運転手を殴って、けがをさせたうえ、料金を踏み倒した疑いで警視庁に逮捕された。

強盗致傷の疑いで逮捕された、アメリカ人で会社員のマルドナウド・ジョン・ケネス容疑者(34)は、午前1時40分ごろ、小田急線・世田谷代田駅前でタクシーを降りる際、運転手の男性(66)の顔を数発殴り、口の中を切るなどの軽傷を負わせたうえ、およそ2,500円の料金を支払わずに逃走した疑いが持たれている。

ケネス容疑者はその後、現場からおよそ1km離れた路上で、酒に酔って歩いているところを逮捕されたが、調べに対し、「やっていないと思う」と容疑を否認しているという。

Strange, an American up here in Iwate was arrested for choking a taxi driver on Sunday. He took a taxi from Ninohe to Nambu-cho, and got into a disagreement over the fare and it ended in him choking the driver. Seriously though, if the guy is getting a bum deal, I'm sure we'd all love to get his side of the story. I've never had it happened to me but a few friends claim they've been driven in circles to keep the meter running up and be charged inflated cab fares. (which resulted in some heated confrontations) On the other hand, like in similar cases, I always have to ask...how the hell did the police catch someone that could easily just walk/run away from a geriatric Japanese taxi driver? Not that I condone giving the taxi driver a shot to the face but as soon as the guy lets go of me, I'd be out of there before the boys in bruu show up.

I don't take Taxis anymore (almost full stop) but I've only had mainly good experiences. The few times they didn't know and didn't turn on the Navi it was irksome, but those are few and far between. Most bizarre one I had though was a driver that picked me up and said he just moved to Tokyo three days before, so asked me if I knew the way before we got going. I thought that took some balls.

As someone who has had his share of encounters with Japanese taxis drives, I have to weigh in on this: Never trust Japanese taxi drivers. Yes, there are some sweetheart, salt of the earth types who I have loved chatting with during rides, BUT the vast majority of Japanese taxi drivers I have encountered are not to be trusted. Please don't assume that any gaijin-vs-jp-taxi-driver story you are reading reflects all the details. Japanese media rarely gives a gaijin a full and fair hearing in the media in such situations.

If you have "any" disagreement with them, legit or not, no matter how big or small, the cops are immediately called and they start lying to the cops. Once that happens, you are looking at jail time (for what may have been a simple disagreement ) or just bending over and accepting the lie the driver tells the cops and paying whatever damages they demand.

The cops will never side with you versus a taxi driver unless there is another Japanese person there to somehow vouch for you. Generally, like most things in Japan, if you follow the rules and don't cause trouble, you will probably never have trouble with a Japanese taxi, but sometimes mistakes happen on the part of a taxi driver, and if you dare raise protest or voice an issue, you will learn first hand that a gaijin in Japan basically has no power and no one will believe your side of the story no matter what the situation versus a Japanese person (unless a Japanese person vouches for you).

There's more than one reason this site is called "fucked" gaijin.

*(Yes, there are douchebags who disrespect Japan laws foolishly, but let's not assume 'anyone' arrested is actually guilty. Japan's 90 percent conviction rate is bullshit for a reason.)

In my experience, taxi drivers anywhere in the world are not to be trusted. Ever taken a taxi in Amsterdam? Good luck!

In my more than 2 decades here I've never had a bad encounter with a taxi driver. You get in, he starts the meter, he drives you to your destination, you pay the amount on the meter, get out, and that's it. No fornicating excuses that the meter doesn't work, in an attempt to overcharge you (like in Greece), no driving around in circles (like in the Netherlands), no stopping in the middle of nowhere to renegotiate the fee (like in Thailand), no bullshit.

So, what went wrong in your case when taking a taxi in Japan? Tell us your horror stories!

I've had a few fuck ups with J-taxis (like I mentioned before, they don't seem to be able to use their own navis or know the areas they're working so well) and have been overcharged BUT I doubt it was intentional or mean-spirited. (only reason I paid the minor overcharge was the d00d was like 90 and I actually felt bad for him as it was obvious he was struggling) Shitty drivers, yeah, but nothing really confrontational...though TIJ and like I've mentioned, few friends have told me horror stories.

By far my worst taxi experience was in Las Vegas...dude actually threw a drink at us (nailed me) when my boss apparently gave him a tip he felt was inadequate. (no idea how much but to be fair, the boss was definitely a cheap fuck....still, no excuse for the entitled fuck to nail me with his drink) Driver tried to flee but I was able to smash his rear windshield with a rock from the roadside before he could escape (he was caught in traffic) and a minor skirmish ensued. (I was basically was kicking this fat fuck's ass but backed off when more people started rushing over) Within 5 minutes the police were there and despite the driver undeniably causing the whole incident, the cops basically said we were both in the wrong and either we both go waste our nights at the police station or cut our losses and go our separate ways. We got the fuck out of there and the night was further redeemed when I won $200 at roulette.

Never had bad experience in Japan either. Forgot stuff in taxi, they came to bring it back, one got lost in odaiba and stop the counter until destination.

WORST TAXI EVAR: Seoul, never hail a cab there, always go to the taxi stations and take one that officially speak english. Even giving them the hotel visit card map one was heading straight for the other side of town. Made a quick (paying) exit at the red light...
