Plastic surgery changes face of Japan to Western one

October 13, 2003

BY GARY SCHAEFER

TOKYO -- Risa Arato never liked her hooded eyes -- even her friends said she had a stony gaze. So the 19-year-old saleswoman decided to remake her face -- and to do it on ''Beauty Colosseum,'' a prime-time Japanese TV show in which people get free makeovers from a panel of ''beauty experts'' including a cosmetic surgeon.

''I used to be afraid to show my face in public -- I was a real indoor person,'' said Arato. ''Now I can look people in the eye.''

Women are more than ever changing the face of Japan by walking into cosmetic surgery clinics and walking out with rounder eyes, bigger noses and fewer wrinkles.

''Cosmetic surgery used to have a shadowy reputation,'' said plastic surgeon Toshiya Handa. ''It was the kind of thing you only heard about celebrities and bar hostesses doing.''

By one credit agency's reckoning, spending on cosmetic surgery climbed to around $25 million last year, up 50 percent from 1994.

Cosmetic surgeons say insecurities about typically Asian looks can be partially explained by Japan's long infatuation with images of the West -- Arato said she idolizes Julia Roberts -- though most of the clinic's testimonials simply describe anxiety about looking plain. AP

I wonder if we will ever see a backlash against that stuff in Asia? Changing your face to look like another race is just...bizarre.

Getting one's eyes "fixed" is huge in Korea, as discussed in this Time article.

I had a student at my old school (a university student) get hers done and the change (over a long weekend) was surprising. Her eyes went from Asian to Western, but since I wasn't expecting it, she looked bug-eyed at first. I got used to it, then they just looked "normal." But that first look...whoa.

WOT?! No pics for us. Pleeeeease.

What I keep missing is taking a picture of dread "eye tape" failure.

Eye tape transforms pretty almond shaped eyes into larger, Eurocentric eyes. This eyelid tape is pre-shaped, transpore tape that look like little crescents. It's manufactured by Johnson & Johnson among many other companies.

None of my student, but you can go here for some "before and after" shots.

Or, if you're not squeamish, go here and see how it's done. WARNING! This link contains actual surgery photos.

Thanks for link http://www.time.com/time/asia/covers/1101020805/gallery/index.html

I see circulars and fliers in my mailbox for this eye multilation all the time. The "before and after" shots look the same to me OR WORSE. Specifically, Kitsune me (l"fox eyes") are a lot more attractive the Western bug eyes. Sheesh.
