Question: US Spec Keyboard

Postby Harhar » Wed Jan 23, 2013 1:53 pm

Quick question. Am I going to be able to easily find a reasonably priced normal US/western style external keyboard in Tokyo? I am trying to reduce the amount of chit I am taking with me for my short time over there, and I would rather avoid the "IT Service" company my firm has for such a thing. Most of my clothes and suits fit into four banker boxes, which either makes me very metro or very non-metro. We can't decide yet.

As a former computer engineer, I am a big monitor / full desktop experience person. So, I plan to have a "semi-desktop"-like setup with my ultrabook in the apartment. Please halp.

You can probably find one in Akihabara easily enough. Don't ask me where though. The only definite info I have is that I've seen English versions of HHKB Lite in Yodobashi Camera.

Cool, thanks! The alternative is to clean up the POS keyboard (like $10 from best buy) I have for my racing sim and shove it into my roller-bag (shipping the rest of the stuff as mentioned above). I figure I can find a cheapish LCD monitor on craigslist or just buy one directly for the apartment and expense it. The "IT company" is allegedly delivering 22s for me to roll on in the office.

You can get 2nd hand LCDs for a few thousand yen in Akihabara.

I am intrigued as to what kind of job you have that involves rolling on monitors.

Didn't think of that. I guess I can hack the home office that way with the cheap LCD.

As to my job, it is terribly boring, sorry. I am a US patent attorney, mostly litigation. My rolling on 22s joke was pretty terrible, but it seems to be mostly a combination of this

and this
.

mod edit - fixed the youtube links.

There's a small store in the basement of this building: http://goo.gl/maps/I0VPl which has a decent selection of 2nd hand items. Otherwise you'll need to tramp about the back streets on either side of Chuo-dori to find stuff.

You're a patent attorney and you're worried about the price of a keyboard?

I think we already covered the whole "you don't get rich by wasting money" stuff...

As for the Happy hacking keyboards...

They are at the same time marvel and crap...

No function keys (have to use fn key) no num keypad...

But strong nice feeling... so to write a book with an old school feeling... awesum...

To play around making 1 key-push macro and stuff... absolute nightmare...

Very true, but keyboards are the one thing where I wouldn't want to cheapskate, and certainly not buy 2nd hand without a certificate of fecal bacteria decontamination.

(If any adventurous cheapskates are in need of undecontaminated PS/2 Japanese keyboards, I have a whole pile at the office)

I haz one at work, it's a bit noisy but the CTRL key is in the right place and I'm a fan of Emacs keybindings.

The Japanese Mac keyboard has CTRL in the right place anyway :)

I didn't know you could do that on Windows, must try that next time I need to use it.

First time I've seen that... where can you get it?

It really depend on the cycle of the moon... sometimes kahma edion eiden got some, usually tokyu hands, always rakuten/ amazon. It leaves a fresh lemon-ish feel to the electronic and remove most of the greasy shinyness...

If you wuz to see the kitchen you'd bring your NBC suits and flamethrower instead... or nuke it from orbit...

Thanks guys. I only inserted the reasonable price bit to make sure the cost wasn't going to be outrageous or something.

I was Aldo thinking to get a second hand laser printer. Hopefully toner isn't crazy expensive.

Time is money and running around town trying to save a couple of thousand yen on a keyboard is not time well spent.

Besides, you're lucky your wife is into wasting money and keeps a cost center like yourself around.

No time for that right now because: IT'S CHEEZBURGER O'CLOCK... YAY !!!

But after, a little wank is effectively not out of the question...

Do you jerk off with the cheeseburger grease on your hand or do you wash up first?

Is January to the year what Monday's are to the week?

This has been a super crappy month following on by a foul 2012. If Feb doesn't get any better, I may be forced to find an elevated spot and jump. :cry2:

Woah, this went sideways (I guess I should have anticiapted that). I was trying to avoid having to buy a $200 keyboard. neways, there isn't room for a keyboard in my bags o chit that are now packed for tomorrow. One thing I also forgot to buy tonight was an hdmi to dvi cord. I am sure I can find that as well.
