Help with Japan Today and Facebook

Postby canman » Thu Jan 24, 2013 1:31 pm

For some reason, my Japan Today account now only logs on with my Facebook account, but I don't want to log in that way, as I just just got flamed by some jerk in Atlanta. I contacted JT, and they said go to the apps page on FB and turn off Japan Today, but when I went to the apps page, there is no Japan Today app. On their homepage, there is no place to change your log in info or avatar or anything. A little help please.

In the upper right hand corner of the Japan Today site, it LOOKS like a Facebook link, but it gives you the option of logging-in/registering with Facebook, or another message.

Clean out any Facebook-related cookies?

Even better, use a separate browser / browser profile for Facebook.

All this integration of the online experience is starting to piss me off. I know you can change settings, clear cookies, and use different browsers to avoid that shit but that means the default setting for a lot of things is now pain in the ass. Even using Google to search is becoming more and more of a chore.

The best part being that your fb account can be suspended overnight for dubious reasons... fucking you out of all your other loginz at the same time...

thanks for the replies. I will give it a whirl. SJ, I do agree with you, that all this integration, while supposedly useful, can sometimes be a pain in the neck. And I find FB to be really oppressive, the way they want to interact with all of your sites and homepages!

I recently installed DNTMe for Firefox and quite like it. You may still have to use FB or some other login to access certain online things, but it's great if you don't want FB (or other sites) tracking what you're doing elsewhere, even if you don't have FB open in another tab. That and AdBlock+ can make your whole experience on the web much more pleasant.

I also purged a lot of FB apps that were simply pointless zombies and have started avoiding the site more. I didn't know people still viewed Japan Today.

I just posted on FB today that I will be limiting my FB usage in the future because too much is shared.
The fact I liked a picture or link does not need to be posted in people's newsfeeds.

I have a script blocker installed on Firefox, and it is amazing how many web sites have a facebook script running. Same with Twitter and Google scripts.

Anyway, I never created a facebook account, because this Zuckerberg is of questionable allure. I do not do business with people stealing ideas from others. So, what do you expect from a jerk without morals: that he respects your privacy? What worries me, though, is that there are now web sites to which access is only possible through your facebook account. I still manage to survive by ignoring those.

Don't have an account at Japan Today either, but I don't understand what people have against it, since it is a useful news site. But then again, some people may expect more of it, like being able to comment their trash.

Even with my minimal exposure to social sites, I got pissed off by this trend toward unification. Recently I was asked whether I wanted to unify by Gmail and YouTube names. My answer "no" is fortunately still respected by Google.
