Zoo keeps Tokyo safe from marauding post-quake zebras

Postby yanpa » Fri Feb 01, 2013 11:04 pm

It's that time of year when zoo staff run after other zoo staff dressed in animal costumes....

BBC wrote:Staff at a Japanese zoo have been practising procedures designed to recapture escaped animals in the event of an earthquake.

An employee of Tama Zoo outside Tokyo donned a zebra costume during the drill as emergency workers set up a barricade.

Carrie Gracie describes how the scenario culminated in the 'zebra' being tranquilised.

I'd like to see them use that same technique to stop a tiger or charging buffalo.

here's an idea...

put all the animals back in the natural habitats where they came from. no major earthquakes and zero fences in the rift valley.

I saw Life of Pi last night and apparently all you need to keep a tiger in check is a long stick and some maguro sashimi so the Japanese might be uniquely qualified in this area.

Runaway Japanese zebra dies in golf course lake
A zebra that ran away from a horse riding club in Japan has died in a golf course lake after it was tranquilised.

Police officers and veterinarians had chased the animal around the course near Toki city in the central Gifu prefecture for hours.

It ran into the lake shortly after it was shot with a tranquiliser dart.

The animal died despite being pulled out within minutes. Officers said it had likely drowned and that its heart had stopped....

Saw that on the news this afternoon. The incompetent fucking idiots shot the animal with a tranquilizer dart right on the edge of the lake. Where did they think it was going to go? Straight into the lake, of course. It did come back out for a bit before the tranquilizer started to take effect, but then they surrounded it right on the edge of the lake again ... so where's it going to go? You guessed it, back into the lake, where it collapsed and was probably where it got a lung full. It was docile. It wasn't charging anyone or causing damage. Incompetent morons.

From that news article it looks like there were plenty of videos taken.

Now, if only they showed us...

They showed plenty of video on the afternoon news, which is why I can confidently assert that the stupidity was extreme.

Looks like Exotic Basashi is on the menu at the golf course tonight

On a serious note, this is why Ueno Zoo does those drills everyone loves to mock, because it is only by playing things out that things like the danger of water hazards emerge.

Always easy to criticize from the sidelines.

This was just a complete fuckup. There was at least one vet at the scene, and he should have known better.

From today's JT article, annotated by yours truly:

It was shot with a tranquilizer dart but then ran into a lake.

The animal was surrounded right at the edge of the lake. Twice. It ran into the lake twice. The first time was when they shot it with the dart, right on the edge of the lake while they were surrounding and closing in on it. Of course it's going to run into the lake. And then the second time, the whole crew seemed to have forgotten what happened only minutes earlier and surrounded and closed in on the animal right on the edge of the lake AGAIN! They were surprised that the animal ran into the lake again? They shouldn't have been surprised the first time, but twice?!

It was rescued within minutes, but its heart had stopped, and attempts to resuscitate it failed, said Takahiro Taniguchi of the Tajimi police in Gifu.

"It was rescued ..." What a fucking joke. Typical official doublespeak to obscure responsibility. The animal drowned because it was cornered and ran into the lake as it was losing consciousness due to the tranquilizer.

The cause of death was unclear, Taniguchi said, although the animal probably drowned. He said that this was the opinion of a veterinarian at the scene.

Given the obvious options, a fucked up tranquilizer dose or drowning, the verdict is still "fuck up."

“We pulled it out, but its heart had stopped,” he said.

Once again, "we" did the right thing but "its" heart just stopped of its own accord. Not our fault.

Complete and utter fuckup compounded by inability to admit it.

A slight leap in scenario, but sorta like the Ghanian guy whose heart just stopped of its own accord as he was being forced onto a plane for deportation. Just coincidence, of course. No official responsibility whatsoever.

I once got bored enough to try and figger out if that was an exception and I seem to remember that even in the last instance the true cause of death is heart failure, but I don't remember why. Certainly from any forensic/physical stuff I studied or read, heart failure is the ultimate cause of every death, ever. It's an enjoyable sophistry.

The Zebra that escaped was reported to be alive.

The Zebra captured was proved to be dead.

You can rudder jerk off all day long on how it might be more complicate or even a zionist false flag if you really need that kind of shit to feel smart.

Or just look at method+result and conclude on a fuck up.
When I rescue a kitty my priority is not the capture part but avoiding him to get in harms way.
Apparently completely fucking up the "no harm" part due to morons is still defended out of probable moronic solidarity. misery loves company as has been proved countless times here.
The zebra was on a golf course not in the middle of rush hour traffic, time was then on their side.
