Google's Public Alerts: earthquakes, tsunami, & Best Korea

Postby Taro Toporific » Fri Mar 08, 2013 6:36 pm

If you have an IP address in Japan, Google is now offering their first international "Public Alerts" that will give Japan-based users real-time information about earthquakes, tsunami, and Godzilla attacks.

Public Alerts for Google Search, Google Now and Google Maps available in Japan

...
We’re launching Google Public Alerts today in Japan—the first international expansion of a service we debuted last year in the United States. Google Public Alerts is a platform designed to provide accurate and relevant emergency alerts when and where you’re searching for them online.
Relevant earthquake and tsunami warnings for Japan will now appear on Google Search, Google Maps and Google Now when you search online during a time of crisis. If a major earthquake alert is issued in Kanagawa Prefecture, for example, the alert information will appear on your desktop and mobile screens when you search for relevant information on Google Search and Google Maps.

An interesting format to gain access to information quickly and to visualise things, but I notice that the current example shows 福島県沖 as being very inland for an "off the coast of" quake. I am guessing that their locations are only to the granularity of the Prefecture level, so aftershocks etc. will pile up on that one spot. Seeing as their raw data seems to come straight from the Meteorology Agency the source info (in full English too) is probably just as good if not better http://www.jma.go.jp/en/quake/

Ah, but servers of Japan's Meteorology Agency go down as soon as there's a real 5+ quake even through the Internet (and therefore access to Google) remains quite functional as it is designed.

They actually have a separate data feed (which you have to apply to access) which (AFAIK) is not on the same bit of intertubez as the public website.
