BMI

Postby kagemusha » Thu Mar 14, 2013 7:22 pm

Had a general health check the other day.

The pros -
The chubby but cute girl who ran the barium check brushed her arm against my dick way to many times to call it a coincidental.

The cons -
The first nurse who ran the first general interview found it very difficult to decide what to check in the form when I told her I smoke 5 or 10 fags a year, only when I go touring on the motorbike. It took her long minutes to stop shaking and agree with me to forget what I said and just mark the 'doesn't smoke' option.

The doctor told me my BMI is too high and it is very dangerous. I don't argue with the fact I have a small tire but I started laughing when she said the average for my height is 74 kg. Telling her the last time I was 74kg was high school, that as she can see I work fucking hard at the gym, press 165kg on the bench and probably only my bones alone are enough to get me to the average didn't do much to impress her.
I haven't been to a hospital here for so many years, I have forgotten how useless those places are.

benchpress doesn't really pertain to having a spare tire, does it? You could be very strong but still suffer the ill effects of having too much abdominal fat.

The doctors here judge us as if we are Japanese, that's all they know. When you talk to the doc, remind him/her that your body is larger (in most cases) and you need a stonger dose. Not that they'll listen, but it's worth the effort.

In my last check-up, the doc said I was "smarter" than the average American.... I thought he meant I was bright, but really he meant I was less fat that the average Yank... What are ya do0nna do???

You have a 50% chance of being smarter than the average American, so it was a good guess on his part

Wait until you have real health problems...

Then you will realise how really useless they are... (albeit for a short period of time if you are lucky enough to die quick)

Aslo, is it here the last shithole to perform systematic barium testing ? Lucky there is a shortage coming...

BMI of 24 and body fat of 10.5%, (171cm, 71 kg, Blood type A, likes romantic walks from Tokyo station to Yokohama, and hates injustice and mizumushi) , so yeah BMI bites moose balls. I just felt like doing some horafuki.

Moreover, you don't see skinny or flat belly guys taking part in the world strongest man competition, power building require eating a lot. 2 years ago I went on a diet down to 84kg and lost a lot of power on the way.
My point is that to judge a patient sitting in front of you based on general data collected from people completely different physically from the patient is idiotic.

Yeah, but MrUltimateGaijin's point was that just because you're strong doesn't mean you aren't too fat. Sumo wrestles are some strong mother fuckers. Yes, you can be really muscular but have low body fat which throws BMI off. However, how much you can bench press doesn't tell anyone shit.

By the way, there was at least one World's Strongest Man who was ripped: Mariusz Pudzianowski. He was definitely the exception though.

Hmm. BMI of around 23 here. But I seem to be considered a bit too fat at the yearly health check...

A coworker of mine came in from his mandatory check (for insurance) and announced, "Well, I'm overweight". I think he's about 178 centimeters and weighed about 68kg. Former triathlete, but still ran regularly. Such a joke.

A Japanese colleague of mine did a statistical analysis on the belly measurement limitations of women and men, and came to the conclusion that, though the numbers for women were about right, those for men were way off. That was for Japanese men, that is. Western men are probably even more out of the normal range, even though there is nothing wrong with them.

The weird thing in Japan is women are allowed to have a bigger waist than men and still be considered healthy.

LOL, but remember TIJ where following instructions/diagrams without using your head is SOP.

also...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Body_mass_index

BMI can be calculated quickly and without expensive equipment. However, BMI categories do not take into account many factors such as frame size and muscularity. The categories also fail to account for varying proportions of fat, bone, cartilage, water weight, and more.

Despite this, BMI categories are regularly regarded as a satisfactory tool for measuring whether sedentary individuals are underweight, overweight or obese with various exemptions, such as: athletes, children, the elderly, and the infirm.

One basic problem, especially in athletes, is that muscle weight contributes to BMI. Some professional athletes would be overweight or obese according to their BMI, despite carrying little fat, unless the number at which they are considered overweight or obese is adjusted upward in some modified version of the calculation. In children and the elderly, differences in bone density and, thus, in the proportion of bone to total weight can mean the number at which these people are considered underweight should be adjusted downward.

Yep, and as you can read I agreed with him. The thing is, I am not even close to being fat, no belly, no love handles but for a very small and 'healthy' tire on the waist.
But this is not about me, as you can see down the thread BMI means shit when it comes to athletes and other population groups.
