Japanese girl sues over anti-asian sentiment in US baseball

Postby kamome » Fri Oct 17, 2003 11:14 am

Reverse discrimination?

Lawsuit alleges anti-Asian hostility in baseball office

Morioka, a Japanese citizen hired in February 2002, said that until her termination in May, she was repeatedly subjected to an "unreasonable, offensive and demeaning anti-Japanese and anti-Asian hostility that pervaded the entire International Department."

In Japan that little Japanese-American boy and his family ask for an apology.. in the US a grown Japanese woman sues....

Shows a huge difference in the mentality of how to resolve a conflict.

Not much to go on from that short news story, but I'm betting she's trying to buy time before her visa expires. 8O

It also shows that if such processes are available, they will be used. The US gives access to the justice process to anyone, even foreigners. And it's relatively easy to gain such access. Can you imagine what would happen if Japan enabled foreigners to sue for discrimination as easily as the US does?

By the way, thanks Ultra for modifying my initial post. A year and a half on FG and my BBCode ability still isn't worth a damn.

Yah,
They'd be swamped.. :D I'd be second or third in line behind many of my Chinese and Korean Brethren.

I'll tell you my racist story, which was quite irritating at the time but since has turned into a story I can tell people.

Went to Osaka to a udon shop in Umeda. Was with 3 other Japanese co-workers. We all ordered an Udon seto. All ordered nama birus.

Beers came, we drank. 3 teishokus came, all but mine. We waited and waited and waited... never came for about 20-25 minutes.

So then my Japanese coworkers asked the waitress where my meal is. She said "I thought he didn't order anything." So then I am pissed but I grin and continue to be chipper." No apology or nothing..

So then she places my order and 20-25 more minutes pass by..

Just as she is about to bring my udon seto.. I decide to leave.. I had had enough. So they paid for their meals, and the cook says I gotta pay for the meal that I ordered..

I told the Japanese guys I was with that I would rather rot in hell as to pay for that meal. They start yelling at the cook.. the cook shut up, and we walked out.. my udon seto sitting back at my table...

I walked down the street to McDonalds and had my big mac seto served in under 2 minutes.
:D

Lesson learned.. next time, walk out after the meal doesn't come, don't sit around waiting forever.

It takes all kinds of wackos is the sports biz, however this case is very odd. Sexual hassment, sure...but this doesn't sound like any normal office or boss.

$3.4 million lawsuit alleges anti-Asian hostility in baseball office
AP / October 16, 2003, 7:14 PM EDT
....She said one executive repeatedly referred to people of Japanese ancestry with the term "Jap" or "Japs" and frequently said Japanese clients were "stupid" or "a moron." She said another once said, "I hate Japanese more than Koreans."....

I don't see how that was sexual at all, and in fact it sounds like she was being criticised. I don't doubt that there were racial slurs thrown about in the office.. especially when they were frustrated.. but I doubt she has any grounds for 3.4 million.

I wonder if she ever told the executive that she didn't like hearing the term Jap or being called a moron? Her being Japanese, I bet she didn't. And I tend to agree with CS, sounds like a Visa whore wanting more playing time in the grand US.

"I hate Japanese more than Koreans"... okay, now something is fishy. Were her bosses Japanese? That's something straight out of Japan... frankly, if her bosses were white, they probably couldn't even tell the difference between the Korean and Japanese customers.

Maybe her bosses were Chinese. That could explain the remark.

If you read the article, you would see that is the alleged reason she was fired...

Morioka said in the lawsuit that after she complained that ethnic slurs made it difficult for her to work, an executive she had complained about retaliated and she was fired.

Says she complained about.. not confront.. Sounds like to me she was doing it behind the executives back instead of doing it the direct communique way.

It was just my opinion based on reading what was written. My opinion was based on what was written:
complained about

Why would they write it like that, why not say confront or addressed or something that sounds direct.. instead it was written as if she had went to someone else about it...

Like you say, neither of us know so I guess we'll just have to wait to see how it pans out.
