Not sure about some members here... But yeah, poor choice of phrasing on my part. I mean something more like "a close mutual ancestor", probably mutual grandfather. (However the Babbage line I'm descended down is full of petty criminals, so maybe I should keep it quiet).

We're probably related then....

(Not really, I'm second generation, but also Irish so there's bound to be a criminal element in there somewhere...)

Hah, I was intending to work in some snark about being related to you, but by the time the petty crimes were committed, any British criminals going to live on the West Island were doing so voluntarily.

I do have a great-grandfather (the first husband of my Babbage great-grandmother as it happens) who ran away to Perth and as far as anyone can tell vanished after drinking his way through a series of outback towns in Western Australia. Does that ring any bells?

Something like that. I am a blue blood. Unfortunately my grandparents' generation pissed away what was left of the family fortune (although to be honest the beginning of the end was losing the War of Northern Aggression) and my parents were dirty hippie college dropouts so I didn't get born with a silver spoon up my ass.

Police plan to serve a fresh arrest warrant on an American teenager suspected of setting a shrine on fire earlier this month in Zama, Kanagawa Prefecture, investigative sources said.
The 15-year-old suspect, whose father reportedly works at Camp Zama, told investigators he was frustrated with the small home his family recently moved into.

Actually, a 15-year-old convicted of arson (no human injury) in Japan would get suspended sentence--probation for 2 years. No minors convicted of arson (1st offense) receive "severe punishment" in Japan.
Juvenile criminals under 18, no matter how bad the crime committed are set free as adults when they are 20 years old and their identity is kept hidden.

Yes but ethnicity aside, is the punishment increased if the target of the arson is a shrine or other religious structure?

Shrines are targeted by arson all the time---They're a "favorite" target of Japanese arsonists.
Unlike burning a church/synagogue/mosque in the West, Japanese view their shrine's as temporary structures that are completely rebuilt every couple decades. When my local shrine was torched by a local wacko, who was caught after a string of 6-7 fires---He received 5 years suspended sentence/probation.
I attended the local shrine association meeting after the arson. Nobody but nobody was angry about the arson---It was expected (shrines are uninsurable). Everybody just moved up the shrine's rebuilding schedule in their minds from once-every-25 years to once-every-15-years.

Just wondering what our new racist member is thinking of this:

千葉で空き家などが全焼…連続放火事件とみて捜査

or this:

愛知・安城市で不審火15件 同一放火犯か

これも「GAIJIN」の仕業だと思っているのかね?
どうですか、univerman666?

Sounds like groups of Japanese kids are roaming around setting fire to houses and vehicles.

Yep, it happens all the time...

Inari Shrine in Tokyo set fire and burnt down

(ANN) TV Asahi (Thu) 12:02 May 2 (in Japanese - goofy Google Translate)
Around midnight on the 1st, a shrine in Inokashira Park in Tokyo was burned to the ground. The Metropolitan Police Department has began an investigation to look into the strong possibility of arson. At 11:00 pm in Inokashira Park, there was a report from a woman who lives nearby that a, "fire can be seen at the shrine." The fire was extinguished about an hour later. In addition to Inari Shrine, the surrounding trees were also burnt...

I'm surprised everyday that Yasukuni has been burned or exploded yet. There are enough angry Chinese/Koreans that at least a few of them are crazy enough to try it.

Didn't some Chinese from Korea (or Korean from China) attempt to set fire to Yasukuni a year or so ago?

Yeap, but nobody really cared enough about the Yasukuni fire to make an international incident about it.

US Teen sent to juvenile detention for shrine arson
Stars and Stripes /May 21, 2013
The 15-year-old son of a U.S. contractor assigned to Camp Zama will spend time in a Japanese juvenile detention facility for setting fire to a historic shrine.
The teen, who was not identified, confessed to setting fire to a shed and the shrine on March 7, only a week after he arrived in Japan. Police said he told them he was trying to release stress caused by the language barrier and the close proximity of Japanese homes....
...
The court did not specify the length of the sentence, but juveniles can be held until age 20 or paroled earlier based on assessments by the school authorities, the spokeswoman said.
