Well, he did say "hope." And, strictly speaking, "financial" is only involvement with money, not necessarily making it (though that's what it implied, but I let omae mona go aheda with using it unscathed because he's a Merkin and they're not really good with the language.)

Entirely possible he sold them cheap exclusive rights for a screenplay well before anybody knew it would actually turn into a movie, much less with Harry involved. But this will boost book sales at a minimum, and hopefully he sees royalties from that.

I happened to like the book a lot, and Jake's writing in general, so hope he gets something positive out of this movie deal.

I haven't read the book, but he certainly has an interesting story which is worth telling.

Meanwhile I'll be working on the screenplay for the action drama tragi-comedic romantic spy horror thriller "Gaijin Gulag".

...'Tokyo Vice' narrates the story of Jake Adelstein, a crime reporter on the Yomiuri Shimbun, the largest newspaper in the world by circulation. Adelstein began his career as the first westerner in the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Press Club but went do exposes on a yakuza boss given a liver transplant in California.
"I had a number of people interested in adapting the book, but I was concerned what would happen if I didn't have some say in what happened to the screenplay. I would have issues if a lot of liberties were taken, as this is the story of my life," Adelstein told the trade magazine.

....TWITCH: Have you been working closely with screenwriter JT Rogers to develop the screenplay? How is the structure of the film - does it take place over the same periods of time?
JAKE ADELSTEIN: Rogers and I went to high school together and were good friends. His plays are amazing. His first play "White People" I wrote about in the Yomiuri Shimbun. We work well together. He has done the bulk of the work. He came to Japan and met a lot of people, has gone over source materials with me and has studied the photos and texts I've provided him. His play "Blood and Gifts" set in Afghanistan when the US began to sponsor the Taliban is amazing. His research was so good that an ex-CIA covert operations officer I know was even impressed.
The screenplay condenses 16 years into about four years. This is why I'm not the main writer -- I'm unable to rearrange my life. I am trying to make sure the dialogue is accurate, the police, the Yakuza, the press and Japanese society are accurately portrayed and that the good things about Japanese life are also communicated.
