Yeah, but if I put that on my land it would block the neighbour's light, which contravenes planning regulations.

Of course it is also possible to go for foreclosures sold at auction.

There are sometimes good deals for properties in Inaka.

Most of the prefab "seikusi" type housing that is around is designed to be disposable anyway - will not stand the test of time and will be pulled down in 15-20 years to be replaced by the next generation of prefab disposable house with crap insulation and designed by an accountant rather than an architect.

Which makes a lot of sense in a country with frequent earthquakes.

Please don't buy into that bullshit line of reasoning.

Indeed, we're talking small 1, 2, 3 story homes. There are plenty of festering lil mold shitboxes all over the place that have survived all that the land of 4 seasons can through at them.

Would you rather be in a Japanese design house or a red brick house during a major earthquake?

In that last big quake there were 8 deaths in Tokyo despite 4 minutes of shaking.

Also GG's original post was inaccurate, houses here were expected to last 30 years, and the modern designs are aimed at 50 years plus. The timing is designed to allow the owner to pass the land onto their kids, who knock down the house build a new one, incurring a debt just as the previous generation shuffles off this mortal housing ladder, thus avoiding inheritance tax.
