Japanese TV network shows off feelable haptic TV
PCWorld | 2013 May 31
Japan’s public television broadcaster, NHK, is working on technology that will allow people to watch TV with their fingers... {it's} a system that maps objects shown on the TV screen in 3D space. “Viewers” place their index finger in a device connected to several actuators that provide haptic feedback, allowing surfaces, bumps and corners to be explored through touch.

That guy's voice is really creepy...

Haptic feedback is awesome for somethings....TV in Japan? Not so much....but I bet the porn industry could make use of it.

...and 8K digital DV that is too much for even most of today's computers. Japan is sooo futuristic hahahahahahahahaha

If the human eye was a digital camera, how many megapixels would it have?

576 megapixels...and we have two of em

(so basically pointless for Japan....though that don't stop em from cramming 70" bigscreens in their 8 tatami dining/living/kitchen/office/family room)

Actually they are.

Seems for screens smaller than 60 inch there is hardly any difference noticeable.

I have a 32 inch 1920x1080, which has about the same pixel size as a 4K 60 incher. Do like the quality, but seriously wondering why the hell someone needs a 60 inch screen for the living room. This 32 inch is already looking quite big here (and my house is not so small).

And then of course there is the lack of quality on J-TV. If the wife and kids wouldn't need a TV, I would throw it out sooner than later.

Since this is a NHK prototype, the haptic feedback device must be targeting the needs of their primary viewership over the age 60. That is, the only Japanese interested in the boring broadcasting of NHK are old farts with severe vision loss due to aging.

Haptic feedback is a user interface requiring very little training--ideal for old users (Yikes like me!).

Exactly my point...even the homes I see sofas in I don't see the sofas being used nor there enough room to justify anything near a 60in.....but I was just at Yamada Denki (buying yet another 3TB HD) and stopped by the TV section....seems like every major manufacturer now has an 80in out and they're in full PR campaign etc mode  while I admit they are impressive looking, they cost more than a kei-car and if you want anything half that size or larger, you're better off with...

Another post commented that at around 30 inches, a screen is big enough. I tend to agree. Most of the content I acquire is in 720p, so this is not very exciting for me.

I would absolutely kill to have 14 inches (of my own) let alone 30 or 40...
