I agree with your basic premise but this isn't really evidence of anything as news organizations use stories written by people of a lot of different nationalities.

Actually, it is a sign of declining standards, or standardization, to be more accurate.
One of the traditional layers of editing in journalism was standardization (known more commonly as style), but it has essentially fallen by the wayside in favor of click bait, speed and apologies if someone notices when you've got something wrong. It's just one more area where traditional journalist practices have ended.
I would also take contemporary journalism with a very fine pinch of salt. People on the ground are likely to upload things onto the net in their raw form, they have no vested interests to serve (and I don't know of a journalist without vested interests, even if they're only for their own self-satisfaction) and it should be easier to judge for yourself what's going on without being fed (Having said that, I'm notoriously naive and probably fail in this area) an opinion someone else wants you to have.
I strongly advise anyone to refrain from trusting any entrenched media organization, anywhere.

That all being said, it's hard not to speculate it's a kidnapping or him jumping ship when the police and family are asking everyone to "hang fire."

So is he still missing? We're at 2 weeks now...

I have zero faith in modern "journalism" which is nothing more than repeating what somebody else said on another website which was adapted from a blog which was somebody's non-fact check opinion, or an offhand social media comment.. etc etc. But the more sites that repeat the "story" the more it becomes the "truth".

Who cares about fact checking when every other website is reporting it so it MUST BE TRUE? Bullshit.

Don't get me started on things "going viral"!! The madness that ensues is sickening. In the fever pitch of repeating the story, hardly anybody stops and asks about the validity or even uses their common sense. But then it is much more fun to be "outraged" at something - right?

Tell me which is the most logical when working outside of your office ?

Of course, when he would have been in a call with someone, he could have mentioned that his battery is low, but that is not what is stated in the news report...

not once have i been asked for photo id here when making a withdrawal and that definitely concerns me. that said, i barely have a pot to piss in these days, so i pity the fool who thinks they'd be able to take me for much by grabbing my hanko and postal savings book. on the upside, i'm one of very few foreigners in my area and they've known me for 15 years, so it likely wouldn't take much for them to clue in that something is amiss. in theory.

equally concerning is the fact that i was recently able to board domestic flights to and from tokyo with no photo id. not once was i asked to confirm who i am or show a piece of id that matches the name on the electronic booking.

Missing since Weds. May 22

Postby Taro Toporific » Wed Jun 05, 2013 12:05 pm

It has been TWO weeks since Garin Dart has gone missing on Weds. May 22:
 There have been no news reports about him in the month of June.
 His friends/family facebook postings have stopped.
 No missing person flyers and posters have been released.
Let's hope Dart's family has hired a "recovery" specialist or high-powered private detectives because we all know how useless the Japanese police are.

Something is definitely odd...J-cops are one thing but the lack of reports and the "hang fire" requests.

Don't think a yak kidnapping would last this long :?:

If we rule out arrest, injury, accidental death, (which we'd know about by now) what are we left with? Took off on his own? (however out of character it seem)

Don't misread me...
(And since gay marriage is now legal in France I will call you like Cyka do)... Husband...

There is a difference between
-considering a possibility: ok maybe is it suicide, at this point even alien abduction can be put on this list.
-mis-rating the overall value of one of the available element:
He called sumthing sumthing->that can only means somethat somethat.
When in real life situation given his working profile and compared to former coworker having the same profile it's nearly a twice a week normal happenstance. Even worse when based on the probably hastily translated wording from a journalist.

Or murder(TIJ though so I guess murder falls under J-police def of suicide)...either of which do make sense when it comes to the "hang fire" requests...

His friends/family facebook postings have stopped.

That's not true. There are regular posts on his page from friends telling him that they're thinking of him. The FVJ have politely requested that people stop speculating on that page because it doesn't do anyone any favours. Especially as his parents have posted on there. The family's thoughts and feelings must be considered.

And when you see the posts on here speculating, then it's good that hasn't moved on to the FVJ Facebook page.

Having know people who got caught being here illegally and deported, they generally seem to be able to contact friends and family in Japan to get their affairs in order.

There's a few of us over here. Still, this thing is really weird if they're asking for tips yet still asking people to hang fire on posters and shit?? Either you want to get the word out or you don't. If they want info still, that sounds like they still have little to now idea where he is.

Kegsy, thanks for keeping us informed.

It would be really helpful if more information was provided to trigger people's memories.

What was the timeline of his disappearance? (where was he at what time, etc).

What were the circumstances preceding his disappearance?

Any recent picture?

And concerning his last telephone call: did he make an explicit call to say his battery was low, or did he say his battery was low as an aside during his last call?

As they say, when your only tool is a hammer all problems look like nails...

Also, it's not a lost dog or runaway kid... Not sure if putting pictures on milk bottles would help. And, if like the police request for discretion let think the situation is a tad more complicate, recognising him in the street might escalate the situation more than anything else.
