Tokyo Tranny Londonstan Express, Wo0T!

Postby Taro Toporific » Sat Jun 08, 2013 6:37 pm

Wheels set in motion for London-Tokyo train link
Telegraph.co.uk | 2013 Jun 8
...
the journey was just a dream – until last week, when a delegation of officials from Russia and Japan met to finalise the plan.
The scheme involves extending the existing Trans Siberian railway, with a bridge from the Russian mainland to the island of Sakhalin. The new train route will then continue south for 380 miles across the Russian island, before reaching the coast. A 25-mile tunnel will be constructed under the Soya Strait, taking the train onto Japanese territory.
It will enable direct rail transport from London to Tokyo in around two weeks....

Trains are for communists...

Wait...

Never mind...

If they could make it an l.g.v. /highspeedrail that would take only 3-4 days... In the comfort of a train... With restaurant and panoramic car it would be a vacation in itself...

Could be fun in that 25-mile tunnel under the sea when an M 9.0 earthquake hits...

Tunnels being designed to support a huge amount of earth over them tend to be quite safe in case of earthquakes.
Traditionnally the earth shake in big chunks with few separation rifts which can be troublesome for rail tracks. But usually much less than surface landslide.

However I really would not like my commute to be at risk of being integrated in any way with London's transport system.

That's pretty frightening...it's almost the first thing that came to mind when I read this story. (The trained journalist was the first thing...)

Russia doesn't have gulags, but it does have lots of cities that forbid entry by foreigners. Many of these places were close to/part of the old Soviet gulags.

For a joke to be funny there has to be a grain of truth in it.
