So do any of you guys fish (not for lemurs) in the few unpolluted/nonirradiated streams/rivers here? Ocean fishing? I hear squiding (once again, not the lemur type) is quite popular. I'm trying to learn how to fly fish (I guess Japan has tenkara also) and while I doubt there are many monsters in the inland waterways, I'd love to hear of any experiences, places, etc you guys have.

Are you sure that whoever offered to teach you wasn't talking about a cooking class?

I used to fish a bunch as a kid back home and have been trying to get back into it for a few years here. As far as actual fishing here I haven't done anything but throw a hobo kit line in a bunch of times and not catch anything haha. Mostly I've just tried to learn about it and where to go. It's pretty overwhelming really since it's such a big deal here. Too much info coming at you from all directions.

Not sure what all you want to know but everything from ocean fishing on 波止 down to 川池 up in the mountains is popular. The trick is to figure out where to go really. I've never had much interest in ocean fishing myself and was just starting to find some places in the mts in Kobe before we moved and am looking again here now. Luckily it seems there are quite a few places close by.

Tenkara actually comes from here but is more popular in the US than here. The big shops don't even carry the rods and things they have to special order them. Places like Naturum though carry them online. I've actually got a tenkara rod sitting upstairs from a when a customer ordered one an I bought two to get free shipping. If I ever get any time at all again I'm gonna figure out the rest of the kit needed an get at it.

Dunno really.. I'd say figure out what you need for fly-fishing either traditional style or Tenkara, buy it, then find a place to go. Too bad I'm not closer to Tokyo (okay not too bad :p) we could get out together.

Velly funny.

I have an FG friend here who is (or was at one time) a licenced fly fishing instructor. He showed my his official licence and actually did say "Fry Fishing". Or maybe it was a licence to catch young fish?

Followed the WikiP link until I found this:
