Inside TEPCO: Making Changes in Japan's Nuclear Industry

Registration/Cancellation Deadline: Tue, Jul 02, 2013
Speaker: Lady Barbara Judge (Deputy Chair, TEPCO Nuclear Reform Monitoring Committee)
Hosting Committee(s): Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Energy and Environment, Women in Business, Young Professionals Group
Venue: Tokyo American Club
Member Fee: ¥4900
Guest Fee: ¥6900
Extras: Meal included

Come meet Lady Barbara Judge CBE, Deputy Chairman of the Tokyo Electric Power Company's (TEPCO) Nuclear Reform Monitoring Committee, set up after Japan's March 11, 2011 nuclear accident to propose a new self-regulatory structure for TEPCO. Lady Judge will talk about how she's been advising TEPCO since September of 2012 to institute a new safety culture to regain the public's trust in nuclear energy and some of the challenges to achieve success, including championing a bigger role for women in the firm.

Lady Judge, a U.S.-born lawyer who has dual U.S. and British citizenship, began her legal career in New York, eventually being appointed the youngest ever U.S. Securities and Exchange Commissioner in 1980.

She has held a number of senior executive and advisory appointments in law, finance, industry, public service, the arts and academic life in the UK, U.S. and Asia, including serving for two terms as Chairman of the UK Atomic Energy Authority. She was also recently voted amongst the 100 most powerful women in Britain by Radio 4 Woman's Hour.

Lady Judge believes that the nuclear industry and TEPCO have learned from the mistakes of the past and are driving major changes on safety. Join us on July 4 to hear her thoughts on that progress in TEPCO, as well as the larger impact to safety standards and communication and how she is positively assisting TEPCO to increase the level of trust the public places in it.

We've seen this battleaxe before. Not someone I'd want on my side. For any reason.
