Sometimes it's good to be in last place

America no longer world’s fattest developed nation, UN report says

According to a new report from the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization, the United States is no longer the world's fattest developed nation―Mexico is.

Nearly a third of Mexican adults (32.8 percent) are considered obese—people aged 20 and older whose body mass index (BMI) is 30 and above. That edges out the United States, where 31.8 percent of American adults are considered obese. ...

On the other end of the scale is Japan, the thinnest developed country. Just 4.5 of Japanese adults are considered obese

Mexico's a developed country? :???:

I'm kinda lost now...do i go with a joke about Mexicans taking our food now...or do i go with a rousing cry for Americans to not give up their first place spot...or I just complain that BMI is a lousy index?

Screw it, I'mma go eat a hamburger with bacon and chili and a large order of fries and figure this out.

Not that I don't think there are plenty of heffers in the US or Mexico but BMI isn't exactly an accurate way to make generalizations.

Fair enough about the BMI. What I'm more interested in is: Does this mean there's an accurate way to make generalizations?

It's probably accurate for at least 90% of adults.

10% is a pretty wide margin of error. I'm just saying that something like body fat % would say a lot more than BMI. This cuntry is skinny fat as fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

I was being conservative. It's probably a lot higher than that. Anyway, BMI is the only way to get a large enough sample of the populations of multiple countries to make a generalization and it is a pretty good guideline for most people. Skinny fat? Whatever.

On a related topic one thing I do find interesting is that a lot of recent studies have shown that being slightly overweight (about 5 lbs) is actually healthier than being a so-called normal weight. If that's true, doesn't that mean those people aren't overweight and our guidelines need to be changed? :???:

The medical term for this is "MONW," or metabolically obese normal weight, which I prefer to refer to as being a skinny fat person. It means you are under lean but over fat -- not enough muscle and too much fat (especially belly fat). It seems it is better to be fat and fit than thin and out of shape.

..........

In my medical practice I see this all the time. Jim came in for a "wellness check up" and felt happy about his weight. His BMI (or body mass index) was 22 (normal is 18 to 24.)

He never seemed to gain weight and felt he could "tolerate" a diet that included lots of bread, pasta, and sugar. He liked his two sodas a day and a few glasses of wine at night. He walked but didn't do much vigorous exercise or weight training.

When we looked under the hood we found he had a blood sugar of 117 mg/dl (pre-diabetes), triglycerides of 350 mg/dl, and an HDL of 35 mg/dl. His blood pressure was 148/96 mmHg (normal is less than 110/75 mmHg).

Anyhow, my whole point is using BMI is outdated.

I know what you're talking about but skinny fat is a stupid term and BMI is the only easy way to get these kinds of stats. In Japan where most people get their body fat % checked yearly (though I doubt the accuracy of those scales) it would be possible, but they don't do that in a lot of places. I never once had my body fat measured in the US whether I went for a physical, illness, or injury.

Most of the scales they sell nowadays (even in the US) have body fat percentage. In junior high and high school, they checked our body fat percentage as well. Accuracy might not be spot on but I'd trust it over BMI.

As to skinny fat...what would you call the lemurs here who have a great shape but zero muscle tone? They're like sacks of cream of wheat with some bones inside...but because they don't look fat and their BMI is either normal or low, they think they're healthy...

BMI can be useful when talking about groups of people. If you have a large group of people with a BMI over 25, then most of those people would have more body fat than a similar sized group of people coming in under 25. Thus we have a very basic indicator of general health for groups. If you want to talk about individuals, then doing a skin fold measurement to gauge body fat would be more useful.

Not if they are athletes.....or skinny fat. Not saying this is the majority of either population but certainly enough to make a difference.

It's hilarious how different the perception of "in shape" changes from cuntry to cuntry though. Last month I was drinkin' with some Kiwis and they couldn't stop laughing at the infomercials on the TV's for training equipment. The "in shape" guy they kept showing using the equipment was really scrawny so all night it was "Bloody hell, look at how small his aaahmz aahhh!!"

Sounds like you are agreeing with me. :cool2:

We have a general indicator for comparing populations, and a more specific one for examining individuals (including athletes and the "skinny-fat").

We're only manglers, but we still call a spade a spade. I'm referring to the Merkin preponderance to call a spade either a digging implement or African-Merkin, depending on context.
