Let's just hope they don't start going after people who view porn without the mosaics. We'll all be seriously fucked if they do.

en anglais (from JT):
Winny developer Kaneko dies at 42

Programmer Isamu Kaneko, developer of the widely used Winny file-sharing program, died Saturday night of an undisclosed illness at a Tokyo hospital, his relatives said Sunday. He was 42.

The native of Tochigi Prefecture released the program for free in 2002 when he was a University of Tokyo researcher.

Kaneko was later charged with helping Winny users illegally copy movies, games and other content and was found guilty by the Kyoto District Court in 2006.

The Osaka High Court overturned that decision and acquitted him in 2009, saying he had not intended to encourage copyright violations with the program, which enables peer-to-peer online file exchanges. The Supreme Court upheld the high court ruling in 2011, saying it was up to users to decide how to employ Winny, which it said could be used for legal or illegal purposes.

Kaneko’s case was the first in Japan to address the question of whether the developer of file-sharing software can be held criminally responsible for copyright violations.

Japan's jackboots at the RIAJ---Recording Industry Association of Japan will offer a literal bandaid solution to illegal downloading of music.
According to the latest RIAJ press release, they plan to:
"...implement educational activities with an anti-illegal downloading campaign this fiscal year… As educational tools we will distribute at summer concert festivals such as Fuji Rock Festival ‘13 and SUMMER SONIC 2013, free novelty bandages with Japan’s new legal download “El mark.” ↓

Pirate Bay ships PirateBrowser for censorship-free search

Shiver me timbers and other pirate-related cliches! The Pirate Bay has introduced the PirateBrowser, a tasty blend of Firefox and Tor with some snazzy add-ons that circumvent anti-piracy measures around the world.

As a 10-year anniversary present to its users, the Pirate Bay team created the Pirate Browser to get around censorship measures in countries as diverse as Germany, Italy, the UK, Malaysia, China, almost all of Scandinavia, and India, to name but a few.

Microsoft chat services and Facebook also block the sharing of Pirate Bay links.

In a blog post, the team writes,

Do you know any people who can’t access TPB or other torrents sites because they are blocked? Recommend PirateBrowser to them. It’s a simple one-click browser that circumvents censorship and blockades and makes the site instantly available and accessible. No bundled ad-ware, toolbars or other crap, just a pre-configured Firefox browser.

The browser won’t give you Tor-class anonymity for all your browsing; it’ll only take care of the search results censorship.

The Pirate Bay, which prides itself on its resiliency, has had more than its share of legal woes over the past couple years in particular. Its hosting situation has been a game of geographical Whack-A-Mole, with North Korea currently providing virtual asylum to the service.

Good-luck-with-that Department...

JAPAN TO CRACK DOWN ON ANIME AND MANGA PIRACY
torrentfreak.com | July 28, 2014
The Japanese government alongside 15 leading producers and distributors of anime and manga are set to begin a huge anti-piracy campaign against 580 sites. To complement the initiative the group will also launch a brand new portal directing pirates to official content being targeted by the scheme.
nIn an effort to crackdown on Internet piracy, during October 2012 the Japanese government introduced new legislation targeted at file-sharers...
...
knowingly downloading copyright-infringing material became an offense carrying a potential two years in jail. While it was hoped that these measures would encourage consumers to do the right thing, today the problems persist.
As a result, this week the Japanese government will act in order to preserve what it sees as one of its greatest cultural exports.
Anime and manga are now consumed in countries right around the world and Japan sees this interest in Japanese culture as useful to its relationships abroad. However, with that popularity comes piracy, much of it facilitated by unlicensed overseas sites.
In the hope of remedying the situation overseas, this Friday will see the launch of a massive anti-piracy campaign aimed at making a huge dent in anime and manga piracy.
The government and 15 leading producers and distributors will begin contacting an estimated 580 “overseas pirate sites” with demands that they mass-delete infringing content. The sites are located in various regions, but there will be a particular focus on China.

I've always wondered what the deal with watching streaming content is in general. I'm sure it's technically illegal but I've never heard of anyone being busted for it or even heard of authorities threatening to enforce a theoretical ban.

It's the Japanese copyright holders going after violators of their material driving this.

Any Japanese content I or Mrs. Yanpa wish to consume comes from Tsutaya.

What Yanpa said + I think foreign content that has no copyright holder in Japan wouldn't technically be a violation in Japan.

It also seems they're only nabbing those uploading the content...not those downloading...and last I read, "streaming" content couldn't be made illegal. (youtube and such)

Yup...
usually copyright issues are 'first person'.

Meaning that if you are not the rightfull copyright owner you have jack shit to say on the mater. Even if you think in your all mightiness that some picture posted somewhere is of dubious copyright status...
Not your pic -> STFU

youtube reporting system if pretty clear about this. If you don't own the copyright of the video you are reporting. your request is not processed.

If you pay for an internet connection, you're paying for anything and everything you consume. Imagine the teeth sucking that would happen if they tried to bust someone for downloading illegal content here. "NTT provided the access and bandwidth to this content!! I paid them for it!!"

Japanese police arrest 44 in three days for alleged file-sharing
ocketnews24.com 2016-Feb-23Anime News Network
1The Association of Copyright for Computer Software (ACCS) announced on Monday that the Japanese National Police Agency, in coordination with 29 prefectural police agencies, arrested 44 individuals between February 16-18 for violation of the Japanese Copyright Act due to unauthorized uploading and sharing of copyrighted material such as movies, music, anime, manga, and business and productivity software through file-sharing software.

From the Police website it appears all the arrests were made for pirating shitty Japanese movies, music, anime, manga and Engrish study packages using woefully outmoded "Share" file-sharing software.
