It's all a scam...
Wagyu Beef Scandal Leads to Arrests, Lawsuits
Wall Street Journal blog / June 20, 2013
Japan’s storied gourmet beef, Wagyu, was in the headlines this week–not on the food pages, but in the crime section, for a case dubbed the biggest consumer fraud incident in recent Japanese history.
On Tuesday, three former managers of a farm that offered investors a 'wagyu beef ownership system' guaranteeing annual returns of up to 8% were arrested on suspicion of misleading consumers. A Tokyo Metropolitan Police spokeswoman said the managers have not yet been charged with any crime.
The managers of the Agura farm, located in Tochigi Prefecture, had promised the returns to investors who temporarily 'bought' cows from the farm, claiming the returns would come from the sales of calves born to the cows.
In reality, there weren’t as many cows as the number sold. According to the former managers, the farm had to file for bankruptcy after being hit by the double whammy of falling beef prices and lower sales following the 2011 Fukushima nuclear accident. (The farm is located less than 100 kilometers from the Fukushima plant.)...
...
In a curious sidebar to the drama, the current leader of the opposition Democratic Party of Japan, Banri Kaieda, also has a connection. As an economics commentator in the early 1990s, Mr. Kaieda wrote a number of articles recommending the investment. In a 1992 article for the weekly Shukan Seven magazine, he wrote that "interest is guaranteed at the point of application, meaning there is zero risk."
As a result, lawyers for the victims have also filed suit against Mr. Kaieda, demanding ¥620 million in damages caused by his advice.

Call me crazy but a claim like that just might give me pause.

I'm surprised they even bother trying to raise cows here in the first place. Even the locals prefer the corn/grass-fed imports with all the marbling.

Hell, If I were in the meat biz I'd be importing buffalo steaks.

I'm also surprised more Japanese don't eat more U.S. beef, too, especially considering how its extensive use of growth hormone can put whopping tits on a 3-year-old, which makes her just about the perfect woman for the average 21st century Japanese guy (if only they could get the cat's ears to occur "naturally.")

I thought it was in the milk? Either way, elementary schoolers with G-cups would make this place a paradise for the locals.

That's pure bullshit. A lot of the locals still prefer wagyu. They think American beef is good for the price.

Yeah. It's not the best quality though the Aussie beef they carry in Japan is often horrible. I used to think Aussie beef sucked based on that but I've had some high quality stuff and had my mind changed.

I have been enjoying Aussie beef exclusively and on a regular basis for quite some time now. Even when sucked it is awesome. :romance: :love2:

I got it wrong, I thought wagyu was the shitty beef with no marbling from rice-fed animals. (the name isn't so descriptive eh?) So...what is the shitty Japanese beef called?

Are you kidding? High end wagyu is like a chunk of fat marbled with meat.

And only two out of ten are banned in Japan...

I'm not certain (up to the law number -certain). But by the way things work in Europe, and by that I mean we didn't even manage to save our most precious over rotten cheeze from death by regulation... If a food ingredient is banned in one member of the European Union I 'm quite certain that it's banned in all the Union... Therefore if you see something mentioned as being banned in England or just in France... Can bet that it's a whole EU ban...

Gyu-ta

http://r.gnavi.co.jp/g234205/

Last week I had the most horrible shabu shabu in my life...the pork was good but the Aussie beef...before they told me where it was from, I was having visions of Chinese "beef" being mixed with cardboard and put into "beef molds." It was literally like chewing on beef flavored newspaper. They took the first plate back and said "too tough? we'll slice it thinner!" Thinner slices couldn't mask the cardboard taste or the feel of eating paper. Ended up with pork only and they took back the plates of cardboard Aussie beef. Good on them for not charging me for it but damn that was terrible...

Choko, not sure you can expect much more quality on a 1600 yen all-you-can-eat course. Even if you ordered ala carte, the restaurant is basically a tabehodai place and probably not very focused on human-edible meat. But sorry to hear about what sounds like a pretty nasty experience.

While searching for a bite to eat with friends a few months ago, I pointed at a similar place we walked past. Friends (Japanese) were aghast. I think we ended up settling on something they considered to be much higher quality (was probably Yoshinoya).

Yeah, not exactly Lawry's steakhouse but I honestly can't convey how inedible this stuff was. I mean, it literally tasted like cardboard. I would have gone with the Wagyu had I not already downed a bunch of veggies and pork at that point. (I was there with 3 other Japanese and the place was full of non yankii Japanese...even females so I don't think it is looked down upon that much)
