Pro tip: go to Wikipedia, find the article describing the concept you want, then look for the 日本語 link on the left-hand side, and there is a good chance it will come up with the equivalent Japanese word. E.g. "Diesel_fuel" -> "軽油". Assuming that is the kind of "diesel" you're looking for. If not, the disambiguation page is your friend.

This works for other language combinations too.

The poulp answered with 軽油 which is "kei yuu" "kei" like for kei jidoosha "yuu" like in toyuu: heating fuel/kerozene

But the solution brought by Yanpa don't solve the problem... Unlike when I was searching for Russian heavy wreckers and couldn't find 1 proper word -thank again сука, still owe you one for this- Here, it's the plethora of half broken wording that make life a living hell
If you are facing an inbred gas attendant and show a little paper with kanjis "軽油" if they are used to say diiiizeruuu instead... written in hiragana... you are still halfway fucked... with a fully empty tank...

(need a move to "coligny must learn japango" thread me think...)
And don't get me started on old books that became unreadable because the kanjis are not used anymore... No matter how old the french pre or post reform(s) is you'll get the meaning in no time (hunting for old metaphores and hyperboles is particularily delightfull... For an easy introduction... anything by Moliere...).

btw you can't use the term 'classic" with a borderline fraudulent classification coined in 2009...

You could also just use ディーゼル. No Kanji involved there...

Had a (70yo now deceased) friend in Paris collecting old japanese books, can't tell the precise era at all. It was normal looking books (small handwritten but not scrolls, never paid much attention his stamp collection was much more interesting). But no idea whatsoever beside 'certainly way pre Meiji... maybe...'.

But same as for tires... not because I can't tell the ply name or the thread pattern specs that I can't see the result... I'm not trying to fix the japango... Just noticing that most of the time, that thing is hillariously fucked.

Kanji of the year forgotten next month... and lost at sea, shape and meaning by the end of the decade... Anything written before +800 (AD) pre kana might be as well written in rot13 klingon... Compare that to greek... -900 (BC)... Never felt like "language as a communication tool" was a huge priority in Japan...
At least hieroglyphs looks cool...

Molière is more recent than Shakespeare, and I would imagine the language is closer to modern French than Shakespearean English is to modern English.

Give me a PDF link to an old english version of Beowulf and I'll give it a try... (no copyright on these oldies)... And my google link beowulf to the painfull 99' movie with Christopher Lambert...

[edit] seems to have found a side by side modern/old PDF torrent, so if it's not again a trap with gay porn it might be good for a look...
[edit 2] the old version have easily 2 times the wordcount of the modern version !?

Yea, but Moliere near entire work is focused on making a buffoon of the king, clergy and courtisan... And he survived...

Also, if my memory serves me right. All his plays are published in old and modern French depending on the age of the student. Junior highschool go with the modern French while highschooler got another go with the original writings.

But, but, don't Japanese kids learn classical Japanese in school in order to understand their forefathers?

Actually, this 12th Century French looks remarkably readable http://fr.wikisource.org/wiki/Tristan_% ... leterre%29
English has changed much more in that period: http://quod.lib.umich.edu/c/cme/Gawain? ... w=fulltext for 14th Century English

Starting in 1635 with the birth of the Academy Francaise. The language became policed... by cranky old men wearing swords....

And if you wonder why we can make everything by ourselves these days (fastest plane -Concorde-, fastest train -TGV- and fastest car -Bugatti Veyron- in ze world) it might be a bit because our sort of multidiscipline M.I.T. equivalent date back from 1530

Excellent comments, as always, on this topic at el Reg.

Of course, they all trot out the lies from the Daily Fail's source, an on-line only "entertaining blend of daily news, business and features" for the expat community in Sweden fuckedfrämling.com, that this is the first found in European waters, when the Danish Natural History Museum original source for all this tomfollery specifically mentions the Odra River in Poland.
