Bathroom curtain eyelets: where to buy?

Postby Russell » Sat Aug 17, 2013 1:20 pm

Not really high tech, but I don't know where to post this otherwise.

Just bought a bathroom curtain over the Internet, only to discover that it is attached by sticking a pole through the holes at the top. Not much imagination needed to foresee that these holes will tear out within a month, so I started to look for eyelets (or grommets, whatever they are called).

There are metal eyelets available in Japan but they are for holes to only up to 15mm diameter, while mine are 25mm.

Bigger eyelets are available elsewhere in the world, but I have not been able yet to find them in Japan. I tried some home centers, 100 Yen shops, etc, but nowhere. Curtain shops are willing to attach them to my curtain for outrageous prices.

Anyone know where I can buy such eyelets? Even plastic ones that can be snapped on should be fine. Target price is up to 50 Yen per eyelet.

Here is an example of what I am looking for.

The electricity aisle will have bigger eyelet in rubber and plasti/nylon usually in black. Called grommet their purpose is to allow electrical wires to enter metal box without the edge of the metal risking to cut through the wiring isolation. If not, try automotive interior customization aisle at yellow hat/autobacusu they have weird stuff sometimes.

Definitely not a classy solution... But to put in the 'better than nothing' category...

Lastly, improvise with some transparent shoo goo and sheet of ice transparent pvc plastic cut from paper file holder ...

Hmm. Interesting solutions, Coligny. I'll check those out. Thanks!

I just realised that I don't remember ever seing a curtain shower in Japan. so like for central heating, that might explain the whole mess...

Actually, it is curtains for the windows in our bathrooms.

Normally, curtains don't let through much light, but these do, without revealing much of the body shapes of the people behind them (that's why the Missus likes them). I found them in a net shop in Tokyo, and though I like them, the holes to hang them are flimsy.

But, yeah, shower culture here is different from Europe and the US, which may explain the scarcity of these eyelets on the market.

Don't you have privacy glass in there?

Yeah, the only shower curtains I've used here were exactly like you described, often broke, etc. But....that was my tiny ass 1K+loft apartment. Every other bathroom I've lived with here was walk in shower/bath with a door. (So no need for a shower curtain)

It is for the windows to the outside. These windows have privacy glass, but apparently this is not good enough for the Missus. Indeed, one can see some vague shapes through it.

Have to keep the neighbors' prying eyes from my kids' phantom shapes, I guess.

DOOD, give up that curtain shit and put some fake stained glass transparent vinyl. From outside it will look like Cthulluh is showering...

(Apply with the dishsoap/water spray wetted surface application method to avoid bubbles...)

It is already frosted glass like this:

Hard to apply vinyl to that.

And the curtains are kind of cute, actually...

The other side isn't flat?

Kinda off topic but I would hope the flat side is on the outside....

I've seen another where they squeezed some honey onto the glass and pressed another piece of transparent glass or plastic and the window became crystal clear.

I just checked.

Frosted glass is flat both from outside as from inside the house. Frost is between the panes.

Not the same kind. Shower glass has big and semi randomly patterned. You'd need to watch from a few km to restore some kind of image clarity with such method
Your video show something like sandblasted glass. The tape act like a gloss coating to restore transparency. Bit like automotive paint. Most cars are painted on a color that is flat at first then receive a transparent gloss coating. That burn and peel of in the sunshine...
