Smartphone, Stupidpeople

‘Smartphone Walking’ Becomes Safety Hazard in Japan
We’ve all witnessed or been party to it—someone walking into a wall or another person because he or she was too distracted by a phone to pay attention to the surroundings. The Japanese have even coined a term for it: Aruki Sumaho.

Comical as these scenes may seem—like something out of a modern day “Three Stooges”—in Japan, “smartphone walking” has become a serious safety concern. As many as 18 people stumbled onto train railways in 2011 while preoccupied by a phone, and this year a young boy fell off a train platform in Tokyo while looking at his screen.

Although some perpetrators acknowledge that staring at a screen makes “you lose a sense of what’s around you,” others argue that they can’t finish their work if they don’t check their emails while on the go.

As a response to the ongoing incidents caused by smartphone walking, companies and government institutions are creating Aruki Sumaho policies and warning campaigns, according to some evil "news" corp...

*There are good people, and those who walk and text...there is no overlap.

While riding my bicycle back from the supermarket last night some jackass kid (probably in the 16 to 18 year old range) was riding straight at me. I hit my bell but of course he didn't notice because he had his iPhone earbuds in while simultaneously texting with one hand and unsuccessfully trying to keep his bike going straight with the other. It was hard for me to choose a direction to go to avoid him because he was weaving all over the place like a drunk. Luckily for him he noticed at the last minute and veered to the right because I'm pretty sure a collision with me wouldn't have gone well for him.

Ha, the other day I encountered a high school boy riding his mama-chari bike while playing a (loud) game on his smartphone with both hands as he leaned forward and steered with his elbows. Luckily it was in the middle of the rice fields, and I was walking so he got off with nothing more than an "Oi!" from me (which almost toppled him off his bike... ).

From the number I found, just the weight in oil is 5 times the weight of the biggest Amurikun super aircraft carrier (it's like a normal aircraft carrier but wearing a cape...) and maybe 1% of the steerability...

There's days where I find the speedo behind the steering wheel to be too distracting to read (as opposed to hud type or high central console kind). Just the time to focus eyes on speedo/refocus eyes on the road feels like an eternity...

(bonus with those Made In Taiwan add on HUD speedo is their overspeed alarm)

Agreed.
Ever since I put the GPS speedometer on the dash, looking down to check the original speedo is a pain the arse, so I normally don't bother. And yet ... I see people driving while talking on their phones all the time. Dumb, dumb, dumb ...

I almost ran over some kid (same exact scenario except I was in a car) yesterday and he didn't even seem to notice. I managed to scare the bejeezus out of him with the horn but he didn't fall over like I was hoping.

Seems to be a statistic analysis only... also known as "fraud" in the real world...

checked out some raw figures provided by an unnamed cellular provider over an eleven-day period in 2005

Give me few days and I can write you a really serious paper concluding that:
"The number of women commuter with fully shaved vulva do not increase the time delay of regionnal trains (for the first week of March in central Serbia on rainy days)"
With raw figures provided by an unnamed razor blade for p00nany maker and pictures of trains to back up everything...

OK, I'll give you a few days time, and look forward to read your paper NEXT WEEK.

That's quick. But,... your DOG? Don't cats eat papers anymore these days?

I assume you must have a huge data base of data on women with shaved vulva, to be able to finish your assignment so promptly.

But seriously, how would you be able to prove the presence or absence of a relation between cell phone use and safe driving? Examining statistical data on car crashes makes a lot of sense in this context, does it?

The "over 11 days" period
And 2005 stardate (IPhone unveiled in 2007, with him the boom of the touchscreen that can't be used without looking at the phone)
are also not helping their case...

Now, if you want to cheat even better, consider that since when they crashed, they were mostly using their phones... and not driving... You can reduce even more the number of accident while driving because of mobile phone use. (a bit like saying that speeding don't kill you... it's the excessive deceleration that is usually fatal...)

American dim-fon users, when you can get one to work, user not the phone, are quickly becoming the world's leading mop pushers with really long qwerty thumbs. I would be pretty pissed as an employer.

Many Japanese using them? Besides the baka generation. Do people use them at work?

why the prevalence of cell phone ownership has increased steadily over the past thirty years or so, yet the number of crashes per vehicle mile traveled in the United States has not followed suit.

ABS
Less drinking and driving
Better enforcement of speed limits
Improved tires
Better road layouts
Less kerbside parking
Greater traffic volume reducing the time cars spend travelling at speed

Compared to Mercobenz system who after more than 5 years in the S-Class still refuse to break properly with most auto journalist setup to test it ending in hospital... I'd say... Nothing... I don't know how hard it can be to get that stuff right... But with what can be done by a half drunk hobbyist with an arduino, I wonder how Bosch or Benz can fuck up a device merely just looking forward with a clause "if big shit block road, must stop"...
