Though it is a bad idea to hold the Olympics in Japan for the coming decades with all the problems they have (huge deficit, Fukushima, recovery efforts for Tohoku, etc), I hope that it will force the government to take at least one of the problems (Fukushima) seriously.

I don't cross my fingers with Japan feeling more accepted by the world because of the Olympics; I suspect they will rather feel more adulated...

Why is it a bad idea?

It costs money to fix things.
The projected cost of holding the olympics is supposedly about 1.3 trillion yen.
The projected economic effect is something like 3 trillion yen.

I see a net profit there, and much of it in the public sector.

I am from Colorado and we have successfully defeated Olympics. International Olympic Committee in 1970 awarded the 1976 Winter Olympics to the state. Understanding the Games’ negative impacts to mountain communities and environmental concerns, a groundswell of ad-hoc public opposition organized quickly and effectively, placing an initiative on the 1972 ballot banning the use of public funds for the Olympics. The No-fucking-Olympics Ballot passed by more than 80%, which was only time any city declined a winning bid to host the Olympics. (Doesn't anybody remember how Nagano lost their shirts on 1998 Winter Olympics?)

I'm not totally against it, I just wish they would scale the whole thing down to a more realistic level. Like do we really need to spend huge amounts of cash on the opening and closing ceremonies, how about Emperor-sama just walking up, pulling out a lighter. lighting the torch then having a BBQ.

The 3 trillion yen economic effect I mentioned in a previous post was conservative, apparently. According to "a research institute" (whatever and whoever that is) it is now 4.2 trillion.

And remember, the effects start now, not in seven years time. Coming right on the heels of a small but noticeable economic upturn (that might otherwise have petered out) I'm going to hazard a guess and say that the timing is just about perfect. Of course things could go wrong, but nothing ventured nothing gained, as they say. In this case, and at this time, I think it's quite reasonable to be enthusiastic.

Given what the IOC had to choose from, I can understand the choice. I think Abe overstepped the truth when he made claims about the Fukushima disaster being under control/contained. (I've already had 3 lemurs tell me they "feel safer because the olympics are coming." I do, however, hope the added pressure (and funds) results in better results with the Fukushima effort cause as I said before, if shit hits the fan again, they have more than just the "everyone likes vanilla" We Japanese to answer to.

I know if I were living in your area, I wouldn't be too happy to see all these funds being raised throughout Japan to be spent on the TOKYO Olympics. The longer I'm here, the more I understand the resentment Japanese outside Tokyo have for Tokyo. I also worry about the growing nationalistic sentiment that this will further channel. Did you guys see the (drunk) gov's interview from Buenos Aires? He said something to the effect of, "We got past the media scare by giving them real data. That's the way to get through to gaijin, give them data!

That being said, Tokyo might actually be "improved" by the projects (already underway? ) and if it helps the economy, I'm all for it as well...but with the coming consumption tax increase, I'm not so sure what kind of long term effect it will actually have on the economy.
