Shichigosan ceremony gift

Postby Christoff » Mon Sep 23, 2013 1:40 pm

Going to a shichigosan ceremony, is it customary to bring a gift and if so that might that gift be?

Thanks!

I don't believe gifts are given generally but am not sure. We never received any when my son did his twice now. If there were gifts it would probably be just money. I'll ask my wife when I have a chance.

Okay I asked the ladies here and they said they had never heard of a gift. Also shichgosan is usually just a family thing at the shrine so we couldn't figure out what kind of ceremony it would be. Is it like an after party? If so they said to maybe bring a cake or something. If you are just going to watch the blessing at the shrine then no gift according to them. You might want to have a nice crisp \1000 bill ready though in case others start giving money.

Same here. Mrs. Taro said, "It's just for family."
I have been to one---I sure as hell did not give any gift and neither did anyone else. (I avoid weddings and funerals like the plague because they are so costly and unfun.)

As opposed to the west where funerals are fun?...

:drunk: The wakes are. :drunk:

(Some the toasts at my family wakes are well worked out stand-up comedy routines that have been obviously prepared for years---Almost as fun as a New Orleans funeral procession.)

Agreed, funerals are the good occasion to get shitfaced drunk in memory of the quitter... Usually in his favorite restorant.

If it is the ceremony for the kid of Kim Jong Un, then bringing a real-size aircraft carrier as a gift will certainly be appreciated.

In all other cases, bringing a good mood is sufficient.
