Don't worry Coligny, the power of K-drama is proving too much for China and Japan...hell, between that and K-pop, WWIII may end up being South Korea vs. the rest of Asia.

I visited it with the family just one month ago, and it was all OK.

Will they remove it?

When I saw this on twitter today, I just had to check "ガンダム お台場" on Google News, etc. Nip, Null, nothing.
I should've known that all the news stations, even NHK, would be covering "Gundam Down" event on live TV.

The newswires have been in a tither about Japan wanting to build a real moving GUNDAN by the year 2019.

Take up the challenge of the ultimate dream and make the full-scale GUNDAM move.
We are looking for ideas from around the world.
In 2009, the 18m full-scale GUNDAM statue made its appearance. With its majestic figure it captured the heart of many people and showed us the potential of a dream.
Now, GUNDAM moves Japan and the whole world towards 2019, the year of GUNDAM 40th Anniversary.
"Challenge the dream: GUNDAM moves and it moves the world"
Bringing global knowledge together to challenge the ultimate dream! The aim is to make the 18m GUNDAM move.
To achieve this ambitious goal, we will develop a global project based in Japan, building a project team and collecting ideas and plans from around the world.

How about "challenging" the dream of useful robots all over Japan? Instead we have VR wanking machines, million dollar robots that can hardly do more than kancho, and still the rest of the world buying into "the Japanese have all these crazy robots" mentality... Arguably we are already past the point where kaigai robots are more of a reality and the local shit is mostly gimmicks....just like garakei being outdone by sumaho, it's just a matter of time til people recognize it.

It's not 1982 anymore... You can build this kind of stuff with otc parts in few weeks.

Hydraulics: alibaba.com/ made in china
Sensors: the phidget lineup
Guidance: ardupilot

It should be nothing more than a highschool team graduation project...

They just want it to move...not create " a fully functional weaponized Gundam suit."

Boston Dynamics gonna ruin their dreams of either though...

Pretty much, yes...

http://www.tut.ac.jp/english/

Now more seriously, with the colossal advance in cheap sensors and actuators these last few years you'd be surprised by what can be build with of the shelf --CHEAP-- parts. Especially if it's to be operator controlled and not autonomous.

I always followed from far robotics tournaments. With the excuse of it being to expensive to go that way. But these days... i'd worry more about the price of aluminum for the chassis than for the actual robotic parts.

Edit:

Seems you can even already by one 36 milliuns yenz:

Well, there is now a Flip Gundam...

The Gundamguy blog describes the above as a, '"Life-Size Statue of the RX-78-2 Gundam at the Jed's Island Resort on the McArthur Highway, Calumpit, Bulacan in The Philippines." The resort has other mecha statues too (more photos).

For comparison, the faux-Gundam of China circa 2010 (techcrunch.com).
