U been Ban Go

What do you guys use to look up zip codes? It seems like every week I am googling the shit out of addresses because far too many people don't think they're necessary...even when most Japanese can't give the correct reading of many of the addresses.

That's what I use now but it's a bitch if you don't know the correct reading of the Kanji in the address. (Hence the googling the shit out of the names) Just wondering if there is a site you can copy/paste the address you do have and get the correct zipcode without manual searching?

choko, did you check out the 2nd part of the screen? You do have to pick the prefecture from a pulldown menu, so you're screwed if you can't read that and match the kanji. But for the rest of the address, you can just paste it in.

So start on the page listed above (http://www.post.japanpost.jp/zipcode/index.html) and go to this section, picking out the prefecture and pasting the rest of the address (up to, but not including the chiban numbers)

Then click the link on the confirmation screen that it matches the place you're searching for:

Then, voila, the result:

Does that do what you're looking for?

Oh, wait, it's even easier than I thought. It looks like you don't even have to use the pulldown menu for the prefecture. Just leave it unselected and paste the full address (again, up to but not including chiban numbers) into the field on the right. This worked just as well as my above example:

OM, thank you for pointing that out. I've been oblivious to it for the past 5 years and it'll probably save me hours each week.

Did anyone else sort of giggle at their neologistic gymnastics with the use of 'zip code'?? Why not just call it a postal code like the rest of the world already does??? :?:

Great romanisation of the title, there, BTW, Choko.

Sounds like something a bouncer at a Thai titty bar would yell at some drunk NZ'ers.

Quel funne.

Does Zip code sound so weird? I shall make an effort to say postal code from now on...except when referring to the "different zip code rule."

Only if you read it after a heavy taco dinner, apparently. Nice fresh homemade salsa, too.

I totally forgot that is the standard US term.
